1904 Swift - BS 8487

Lovely collection of extremely old cars lined up at Newby Hall back in 2013 with a rare Swift from 1904 in the foreground.
The Swift Motor Company was based in Coventry, England from 1900 until 1931. It grew from James Starley's Coventry Sewing Machine Company, via bicycle and motorised cycle manufacture.
The Cadet of 1930 was their last vehicle though as they couldn't compete economically with volume manufacturers such as Ford.

Another previously unpublished shot taken at Newby Hall back in 2013. Only first registered with the DVLA in 2012, so I'm guessing it was imported from overseas around that time.
Amazing to think this car is now over 100 years old.

Panhard is currently a French manufacturer of light tactical and military vehicles.
However, the company was originally called Panhard et Levassor and established as a car manufacturing concern by René Panhard and Émile Levassor in 1887.
They sold their first car in 1890, but sadly ceased manufacturing for the civilian market in 1968.

1911 Model T Ford Tourer - BS 9577

The show board was very informative, but I do wish they'd had it stood beside the car and not mounted on the radiator.
Anyway, the Model T (colloquially known of course as the Tin Lizzie at least in the UK) was produced by Henry Ford from 1908 until 1927.
Generally regarded as the world's first truly affordable car and which supposedly came in any colour as long as it was black!

Loved the rustic authentic feel that this old timer had, but I hate to admit I'm not sure what it is.
Can't read that plate in full to check the records and I can't put a name to that logo on the radiator!

I doubt if a more suggestive and striking mascot than the "Spirit of Ecstacy" has ever been produced.
What I didn't realise though was that the original design was based on an actual person: Eleanor Velasco Thornton.

I really like these calormeters you often find sat atop the radiators on some old cars. Just a shame I forgot to make a note of which car it was on.

So, this week's Sunday Challenge was ground level ... camera no more than a few inches of the ground or at least as low as you can get.
And it didn't matter what you shot once you were down there, so I decided to use this photograph, which I took at Ripon Old Cars last weekend.
Interestingly, I'd sought out this vantage point because of the trouble I have getting up and down taking shots in the main arena due to having dodgy knees caused by too much road running in my younger days.
Anyway, enough about my ailments, for this show I decided to try and capture the majority of exhibitors as they were arriving.
Having them come to me so to speak once I'd got into a low down position greatly reduced the amount of times I had to move. Not only did it save my knees somewhat, but it also got rid of another pain I have to contend with at shows when trying to get clean shots ... visitors!
The exercise proved so successful that I actually had to switch back to shooting only JPEGs to keep going and even then I filled the card before I'd taken all the shots I would have liked to take.
Thankfully though, not before I'd captured this Lomax 223, which for those that don't know is a hugely popular three-wheeled kit car.
Both the driver and his passenger looked so happy to have their photo taken I decided this had to be the shot I'd submit for the challenge this week. They both made me smile and hopefully they'll have the same effect on you too!

Yet another detail shot, which I can't identify fully. Must admit I've tweaked this a little just to see how it would look and I'm fairly happy with the outcome.

The first of two 'crowd' shots trying to capture the atmosphere of this popular Yorkshire show. In the distance beyond the AA display is Ripley castle itself. Sadly, I never got a chance to have a look around it ... too busy looking at cars!

This is the second 'crowd' shot. Still looking down the hill towards the lake, but this time to the right away from the castle.
