People Working Ahead ...

For this week's Sunday Challenge , for which the topic was manly pursuits .
A bit of a tricky one in some ways because I don't think that nowadays there are many activities which you could say are for men only. Even hobbies that might once have been seen as for being solely or at least predominantly for men, such as DIY, are now quite popular with women too.
The times are no longer as Bob Dylan once sang a-changing ... instead they have changed and changed significantly.
Take this temporary road sign I found discarded on the ground behind Northallerton's leisure centre. When I was growing up it was understood that this meant Men at Work . Yet nowadays although the sign looks exactly the same as it always has, and certainly still looks to me like it depicts a man digging, it is now described as indicating road works ahead.
I guess it won't be long before the only true manly pursuit left for us guys will be growing a beard!
Also for Sight and Sound . I nearly went for the Dylan track referenced, but in the end I couldn't resist the double pun connection offered by Men at Work with "No Sign of Yesterday":

What might be described as a 'nearly ran for a recent Sunday Challenge , the one which asked us to read through the challenge ideas thread and pick yourself a challenge that hasn't been ... done .
This one was pulled from the archives and would have gone under urban decay .

For this week's Sunday Challenge , which asked us to read through the challenge ideas thread and pick yourself a challenge that hasn't been ... done .
So I've elected to submit this one under either urban decay or walls neither of which appeared to have been set as topics before.
Spotted on a wall in Northallerton during one of my many walks around town looking for things to shoot ... with my camera that is of course!
Best viewed large on black if you have a moment to spare.

For Sight and Sound ... what else, but the lovely one hit wonder by Meri Wilson entitled "Telephone Man" - enjoy:

Ready To Urk ...

This one is dedicated to all my friends in the Sunday Challenge group where the ability to urk , for some at least, has become an art form.
It's actually a macro shot of the street sign for Turker Lane in Northallerton just carefully framed, cropped and tweaked.
EDIT: I should have explained that it's a running joke amongst group members. For example, if you really don't fancy a particular challenge you might say urk , which is probably much better than some of the alternatives!
However, as Urk is actually a real place which can be found in the Flevoland province of the central Netherlands I should say no offence intended to the good people of Urk ... I'm sure it's a lovely town!

Once again this was taken, but never used for The Sunday Challenge when the theme was middle of the day .
This is the last letter on the sign above the entrance to a local coffee shop, namely Costa which is located behind the High Street in Northallerton.
Killer Legs

So this week's Sunday Challenge had the theme of legs: table, chair or otherwise.
Now, as nobody would really want to see my old legs and my wife wasn't up for letting me take a photo of hers that left me with somewhat of a dilemma.
I must admit I struggled to come up with an alternative trying things like shopping trolleys, but to no avail.
In the end I settled for shooting an electrical pylon located between Northallerton and Osmotherley, which was fairly easy to access from the roadside.
Some might say I should have shown more of the legs, but that would have brought the surrounding countryside into the frame and made the sign that my title refers to more difficult to read.
So, I settled for this particular shot from the many I took. Admittedly, it has been processed somewhat, but that was to create a darker and more sombre atmosphere than a sunny Sunday afternoon could offer.
Give it large for best effect! ;)

Another from the series of shots I took for the The Sunday Challenge , which had the theme of At The Market , but which also extended to cover shop displays.
This was in the same window as the Victory Bears that everyone seemed to feel were too nice looking to actually eat and comes with added reflections and more traditional processing!

Another from the series of shots I took for the recent The Sunday Challenge , which had the theme of At The Market , but which also extended to cover shop displays.
This is a photo I took of part of the window display in Bettys Tearoom on the High Street. As you can see these were specially made to commemorate the Tour de France coming to North Yorkshire.
As some people overseas might not know much about Bettys or realise that these are edible, I've copied the following text from their website:
Wearing the iconic yellow jersey that was introduced in 1919, the year Bettys opened, our adorable cyclist bear looks set to take his place at the front of the greatest bicycle race.
Handcrafted from Swiss Grand Cru milk chocolate with marzipan decoration, he certainly leads the pack as a uniquely charming gift.
“With our heritage, we thought it would be nice to do a vintage cycling bear, so we went back through archives to see what cyclists used to wear,” says our Product Development Manager, Lesley Norris.

This is one of a series of shots I took for the recent The Sunday Challenge , which had the theme of At The Market .
Griffdel Signs regularly attend Northallerton Market to promote their business and take orders for personalised hand carved signs.
Not only do they show off some sample signs, but the stall holder also sets up a small display so that people can see him working with wood.
A really friendly and cooperative chap, he was happy to let me take some shots: some candid and some posed.
I think though that this is my favourite from the series and the only reason I didn't submit it to the main group was that I felt it maybe lacked context.

Well I have to say it's been another of those week's where I've been somewhat intimidated by the challenge theme, but as the week's gone on I've felt I've risen to it somewhat.
I really didn't like the idea of taking photos in shops or of people, but I ended up doing both albeit I got asked to leave one shop after I think I'd outstayed my welcome.
Anyway, in the end I've opted to submit this shot to The Sunday Challenge as for me it summed up the feeling of a local summer market best.
No doubt I'll post a few of the others in the new NOT The Sunday Challenge group as there were quite a few shots I liked.

Don't get me wrong, the car was nice, but it was really the bumper sticker and the quadruple exhaust that caught my eye!
