Proteinail 1969 Meets Matchbox Dancing Girls Tetr…

This tells you what you already know: it's all about the eyes.

Tetraptych

This started from an advertisement for a beauty product called Proteinail which appeared during 1969. There may have been a colour version, but the one I saw was in black and white. I thought it would make a pretty picture if the model was repeated four times, like a tetraptych, so I found a way of doing that. I left it that way for several years. More recently, on a whim, I combined the still black and white tetraptych in a double exposure with a vivid colour close-up photograph of an old matchbox. It's not apparent in this depiction, but for information, the matchbox featured a cartoon-like painting of six dancing girls. It is very attractive on its own, just as the original Proteinail advertisement was. I think this is probably the culmination of the project, but you never can tell.

Guerlain is French. They do perfume and cosmetics. They've been doing that for a long time. They must be very good at it.

Wait

Pelican crossing on a relief road that divides a whole street community, Steps lead down to it on both sides - not too good for the old and infirm. For years the greater part of the community was separated from its local pub by the new road. Later the pub was closed, which might or might not have happened anyway. Our dependence on motorised transport has turned us into vandals. Pelican crossings originated in the UK and were introduced in 1969.

1969 Double Exposure

Both period covers: a 'Camera' magazine and a Corgi poetry anthology. The latter, being vibrant colour, has the upper hand.

Felicity Green

Felicity Green was a respected fashion writer and had a regular column in the 'Daily Mirror'. This feature is from the paper of 22 October, 1969. I like the triptych design and the photography is stylish. The photographers were John Adrian and Michael James-Ward. The item has a fold which you can see at 'boot level'. Coupled with the fact that this is from an old newspaper, it probably does little justice to the excellence of those photographers of 1969.

Ophelia

I have taken a liberty by making a double exposure of an image made by John Hedgecoe for the cover of an issue of 'Queen' magazine, circa 1968, which was reproduced in "Photographs '69 - The International Annual of Advertising Photography". I used a Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro + an AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 G DX lens for this picture.

Luggage in Advance

This label dates from the late 1960s when British Rail provided a service to collect your luggage ahead of your journey and deliver it to your house shortly after you had arrived. The service cost a little extra on your fare, yet it was cheap at the price. Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro + AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 G DX lens.

Don't Make a Scene

This appeared in 'Nova' magazine of September, 1969. It is a still from Claude Chabrol's film 'Les Biches' of 1968. The actors in the photograph are Jacqueline Sassard and Stephanie Audran. I've never seen the film, and I don't know one actor from the other. Feel free to add detail and opinion. It's all very French and avant-garde.

Five Girls* in Yellow Swimsuits, 1969

13 Feb 2016 1 217
An advertisement of 1969 for Blue C swimsuits. "Blue C", a trade name for elastomeric fibre in 1969, is perhaps now better known in public consciousness by the name "Lycra". * Careful examination would suggest only two models were engaged, raising the question, how did they perform that illusion?

Degraded

09 Feb 2016 1 234
Advertising, 1969. This was a campaign for 'Dralon' ties. Found in "Photographis '69" - the international annual of advertising photography - I first photographed part of the display with a Canon EOS 40D and 18-55mm kit lens. Subsequently I took a picture of the preview screen on the Canon using a Nikon D700 and an AF Nikkor 28-105mm f3.5-4.5D zoom lens. I have given the resulting image the title 'Degraded' because of the 'photocopy of a photocopy' treatment, which I might be tempted to extend to 'photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy' level to see how much the picture degrades at each stage. Looking at the image of the apprehensive woman whose wrists are tied together, possibly some people would conclude that that sort of advertising is also degraded.
