I'm confused. Is eating this supposed to improve my love life? From April's Western Family magazine. (Originally posted to flickr on April 7th, 2011.)

Oh, for the days when every box of frozen veggies came with a complementary pink satin ribbon!

Don't forget breakfast: the most funereal meal of the day!

Pyrex Ad, 1959

Guess what's in the blue casserole dish and win a prize! (Hint: this being Lent, it's likely to contain tuna or American cheese. Possibly both.) From the February issue of Good Housekeeping magazine.

Creamettes Macaroni Booklet (4), c1935

Don't get me wrong. I love me some homemade mac 'n cheese, even when my wallet is full, but this arrangement is almost fatally drab in appearance. (Lima beans-- shudder!) This meal could've used help from the Lavender Patrol back on Page 3.

Cazuela de Conservado Carne del Misterioso! From our friends in "foreign" lands! I considered posting this yesterday, but I have this thing about not being struck by lightning. From the May issue of Better Living magazine.

"Time-Saving Meals" (5), 1954

Menu: Chicken Pies Cranberry Stars Sweet Potatoes Mixed Vegetable Salad Fruit Compote After the creative frozen pie + cranberry glop "trim", Mrs. Johnson was inspired to start reading Camus and Nietzsche again.

"Creamy-Good Cooking With White Sauce", 1954

25 May 2012 261
"Good cooks pride themselves on making perfect white sauce-- buttery rich, velvety smooth, seasoned just right-- for it is the base of many favorite dishes... -- Julia Lee Wright" Okay, I'd die before I'd bake a souffle with American cheese or consider chicken "fish sticks" curry. However, the presentation here is great. The handle-less gravy boat condiment whatsits, the mysterious fruit-Sanrio fusion faces on the soup cups? Glorious! (Only those brown "legs" on the macaroni plate look sort of dubious, and anyway they're luncheon meat. So what can you do?) From the February issue of Good Housekeeping magazine.

(L) Mmmm... giant bacon-infused "meadow pie." (R) Ah, the "Shrimp Scallop," rumored to be a favorite of Esther Williams' choreographer.

Either of these would be a stellar main course when you fix her that romantic V-Day dinner, Fellas. Nothing moves a woman's very soul like Veg-All™ by candlelight.

(L) Oh, yuck. And I thought the Carl's, Jr.™ breakfast offerings were gross. (R) After pushing around this dinner with a fork for a while, I sneaked into the backyard and fought the raccoons for those discarded bread crusts while Mom was doing the dishes.

(L) Henny Penny wouldn't be beaming like that if she knew the final fate of her poor, hapless eggs. (R) Mama took my Kodachrome™ away, and that actually makes this meal look more appetizing than it did on the cover.

The "cups" are cold cuts and the "burgers" are buckled hot dogs. Brace yourself. The ride only gets, er, dicier from here. :/

Front and back covers. Speculation regarding that weird magenta glop gracing the center of the "casserole" would be... a mistake, most likely.

Layer-Pak Vegetable Label, c1940

24 Mar 2013 242
From a "personalized" letter included with this label: "For a perfect vegetable salad, arrange the vegetables on a lettuce leaf and garnish with your favorite salad dressing." And by "garnish," I'm pretty sure they meant "submerge."
