Upper left: A tisket, a tasket, the wrong olive's in our basket! Lower left: Twenty vegetable varieties in search of a fish stick or a slice of canned meat. Right: They served the pineapple-cheese-green olive-cherry salad-combo at baby showers, so everyone who attended could feel as pregnant as the hostess.

The upper left and lower right images, in particular, make me wonder if directors like Roger Corman and Bill Rebane got routinely dragged to ladies' luncheons during their formative years. (Sweetbreads... bleah!)

Other recipes: Emergency Canapes (pie crust + leftover animal product + ketchup, baked), Eggplant Tid-Bits, Eggs Deviled with Chutney (or Seafood, or Bacon), Egg-Cucumber-Bacon Canapes, Frankfurters Cheese and Bacon, Garden Platter with Cottage Cheese, Garlic Cream Cheese and Anchovies (wah! they're back!), Garlic and Sour Cream, and Broiled Green Olives.

Cheddar-Clam-7up Dip? Shrimp-Cottage Cheese-7up Dip? If I smoked enough funny cigarettes beforehand, I might be motivated to class these as edible. Anything involving Braunschweiger, though, is out. With or without fizzy stuff in it. (Gah.)

I love these illustrations, and I'm sad they're not credited. But I still prefer my 7up as the good Lord made it: In a glass, with nothing added but some ice and maybe a straw. Front and back covers of a booklet published by The Seven-Up Company, St. Louis, Missouri.

"...Mix half cup butter with flour thoroughly. When fish is baked, gently lift fillets, mushrooms, and carrots from the pan with slotted spatula. "Set fish on a plate to drain. Cover with foil to keep them warm. Drain the broth from the baking dish into a saucepan. Place over medium heat and add the butter and flour mixture little by little, stirring constantly with a wire whisk until sauce is smooth and thick enough to coat the whisk lightly. Stir in cream and lemon juice. "Spoon about 1 cup of the sauce over fillets. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve with lemon wedges. Pass the remaining sauce separately. Serves 6."

"...See that the shrimp are covered with sauce and bake 10 more minutes at 350. Serves six." Even without a date given, the color scheme alone would shout "SIXTIES!" Wouldn't it? Some other recipes included: Chicken Divan, Breast of Chicken With Wild Rice And Orange Sauce, Turkey Tetrazzini, Chicken Fricassee, Chicken Cacciatore, and Chicken Royale.
