Cooking With Crisps (2), c1950

12 Nov 2019 1 5 399
"Banana Splits: 4 bananas, Apricot jam, crushed Smith's Potato Crisps, whipped cream for topping. "Peel bananas. Brush with a thick coating of apricot jam. Coat with crisps. Pipe cream on each banana. Place a teaspoonful of jam in a paper forcing bag, remove tip of bag, pipe jam on cream. Serve immediately." You can see the pie down below crying a river of sympathy tears for its fruity friends. Originally posted to flickr on Jan. 29th, 2011, making it probably my very first post over there. Still embarrassed, too. But what's done (to a crisp) is done. :P

Safeway Ice Cream Ad, c1955

From the Eisenhower era of Family Circle. Everything you could ever want in an ad: Multiple styles of illustration! A cute square Pyrex bowl that holds a serving of refined sugar and butterfat the size of Mt. Hood! Plus, check out that "gift box" ice cream carton ("Party Pride"). On the flip-side of this page is a diet formula ad that scolds Mrs. Middle America for not helping Mr. Middle America stay slim. Ah, Madison Avenue, never ever change! (Originally posted to flickr on February 2nd, 2011.)

"Delicious Mueller's Recipes" (2), c1955

Inside of the same leaflet, from the land that seasoning forgot. And don't try to tell me that nobody in Jersey City had ever heard of basil and oregano. I won't believe you.

Outside of a promotional leaflet published by C.F. Mueller Co., Jersey City, NJ. My Mom never used her wedding silver to serve us Mac 'N Cheese. That probably explains a whole lot of things.

Pyrex Cookware Ad (2), 1963

Is it just because of the way the photo's cropped that the loaf of bread in the oven looks big enough to feed forty people?

Pyrex Cookware Ad, 1963

Nothing says "prestige" like wall to wall orange carpeting. From May's issue of Good Housekeeping.

Dzerta Diet Pudding Ad, 1958

I think the advertisers pretty much shot themselves in the foot with the helpful comparison chart down below. You don't want your audience to be dwelling on all the delicious things they could be eating instead of your chemically sweetened box of artificial vanilla powder. From March's issue of Good Housekeeping.

Jell-O Dessert Ad, 1952

In those so-called well-researched collectors' books, you'll find chapters on dolls made of china, wood, bone, rags, paper mache', wax... even leather. But not a single Gelatine Doll is depicted. Grrr... From the February issue of Good Housekeeping

"California Wine Selector" (2), c1960

02 Apr 2011 1 184
I love the Fifties/Sixties tradition of drawing a whole fish as though its tail was folded over like a paper toy. Also, chicks dig sweets so it's okay to give them cheap wine at your card party. Don't forget.

57 Ways of Summer Eating with Heinz, c1950

08 May 2018 1 234
Front cover of an English Good Housekeeping promotional booklet published by J.J. Heinz Company Limited, Waxlow Road, Harlesden, London. Now look at her. You can tell that she's had one summer too many of waiting on her straying spouse and a horde of lazy, ungrateful brats. But thanks to her pre-marriage degree in Chemistry, the salad cream has been "seasoned" in a way which will shortly solve all her problems without the police ever learning a thing.

What About Alcohol? (2), 1946

"Effective alcohol education is not accomplished simply by reading a few pages or hearing a set lecture. It must touch on various subjects in the school curriculum. Attention must be called repeatedly and persistently to the effects that this substance has on the human body and on the community..." And we're just the guys to beat you over the head with this message, until you die of chronic boredom, Kids!
