Santianes - Museo Prerromanico Santianes

Next to the pre-Romanesque church of San Juan Apóstol y Evangelista is the "Museo Prerromanico Santianes", which was obviously built with great dedication and enthusiasm. This seems to have waned, as the museum has probably been closed for some time. Perhaps it is only open in summer.

This church is the oldest surviving pre-Romanesque church in the former kingdom of Asturias. It was built according to the will of King Silo of Asturias, as can be seen from the foundation stone of the church (‘Silo Princeps Fecit...’), and must have been built between 774 and 783. The tree nave church was part of the court complex that was completed with the royal palace, which has now completely disappeared. According to the chronicles of the time, King Silo of Asturias, his wife, Queen Adosinda, and King Mauregato of Asturias were buried in the church.
