Santianes - San Juan Apóstol y Evangelista

Santianes - San Juan Apóstol y Evangelista
This church is the oldest surviving pre-Romanesque church in the former kingdom of Asturias. It was built according to the will of King Silo of Asturias, as can be seen from the foundation stone of the church (‘Silo Princeps Fecit...’), and must have been built between 774 and 783.

The tree nave church was part of the court complex that was completed with the royal palace, which has now completely disappeared. According to the chronicles of the time, King Silo of Asturias, his wife, Queen Adosinda, and King Mauregato of Asturias were buried in the church.
