Goddelsheim is first mentioned in a document of King Arnulf from the year 888. However, this gumball machine is probably only 50 years old. In the 70s, such vending machines were still common.

Schwalenberg - Gumball machine

Schwalenberg, today part of Schieder-Schwalenberg, was first mentioned in writing in 1127. Situated on a hill above the village is Schwalenberg Castle, which was built from 1228 to 1231.
Even before 1900, the first open-air painters had come to Schwalenberg to paint here in the great outdoors. After the turn of the century, the development into an artists' colony began. Artists from Berlin in particular came to Schwalenberg as part of the summer retreat movement. Hans Licht, one of Berlin's leading impressionist painters at the time, even ran a painting school in Schwalenberg during the summer and brought many of his students to Schwalenberg. This finally came to an end with the onset of WWII.
It looks like the gumball machine is hiding behind the corner.

Belle is a village in the Lippe region that meanwhile is incorporated into the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg.
But the village still has this vending machine, offering bubblegum to the kids.

Passing through Kippenheim I found this wonderful, large gumball machine. Four slots are quite a number for a population of about 5.500.
Renchen - Grimmelshausen
21 Dec 2020 |
|
Renchen is a small town, which likes to call itself the "City of Grimmelshausen", as the poet Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen, author of "Der Abenteuerliche Simplicissimus", served from 1667 until his death in 1676 as the Bishop of Strasbourg's executor in Renchen.
Grimmelshausen's work attained a readership larger than any other seventeenth-century novel. In 1668, Grimmelshausen published "Der abenteuerliche Simplicissimus", which has been called the greatest German novel of the 17th century. Simplicissimus has been interpreted as its author's autobiography; he describes the hero´s adventures amid the stirring scenes of the Thirty Years' War.
This red gumball machine is located just opposite the "Grimmelshausen Stuben", the local pub.

When I was a kid I loved these machines, as the gumballs sold here, were the very best for bubblegum bubbles. Unfortunately my parents neither liked bubblegum nor these vending machines...
Though chewing gum is still popular, these vending machines are only rarely seen meanwhile. And most I found over the last years looked forgotten and neglected.

My friends in Detmold have an eye on these machines, so everytime I visit them, they can point out some "new" ones. Unfortunately I came too late here. The Vandals have been faster.

Detmold was the capital of the Principality of Lippe from 1468 until 1918 and then capital of the Free State of Lippe until 1947, when Lippe was incorporated into the new German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Detmold has a population of about 75.000, hosts the "Hochschule für Musik Detmold" ("University of Music Detmold") and still has some gumball machines.

The "E1" (left corner) marks the "European long distance path E1", running over about 8000kms from the Nordkapp to Sicily.

A gumball machine had been here (Wormser Strasse) for decades, but now the vending machine is gone for ever. Only a red, metal square is left.

Though chewing gum is still popular, these vending machines are only raraly seen meanwhile. They should be on the "Red List of Threatened Dream Machines", in case this list does exist already.
