Saint-Quantin-de-Rançanne - Saint-Quantin

The single nave church was erected within the 12th century. The church got damaged during the Wars of Religions, when the bell tower, that stood above the choir, was completely destroyed. The facade has some extraordinary carvings. There are 23 roughly carved horse's heads. There are complex capitals - and above - a row of very fanciful corbels. After all the corbels (see previous uplouds) here is only one capital. A lady in a long dress with braids, flanked by two gentlemen. She has a somehow optimistic facial expression. Mouth open. Talking or laughing.

Is this a mother trying to protect her child? Is this a mother following childbirth? There are so many sexually connoted carvings around... I remember having seen a corbel depicting a birth in Artaiz (Spain), but that was different... Maybe just a mother giving her baby a cuddle.

A man biting (greedily) into a host (eucharistic bread) on the first sight. The second sight reveals the man is naked. Before a prudish vandal hammered off his genitals, the guy was ithyphallic - like many men around the church in Champagnolles, only about 3kms apart.

A damaged (but still explicit) female exhibitionist. Similar sculptures can be found in France, but more often in Northern Spain, all along the camino.

An exhibitionist displaying his anus. Is this the "moon"? If this is an early kind of "mooning", he would express disrespect. At least two incidents are known from medieval times. - In 1204 during the siege of Constantinople the Greeks exposed their bare buttocks to the Crusaders after they repulsed them from the walls. - In 1346 during the Battle of Crécy Norman soldiers "exposed their backsides to the English archers and many of them paid a high price for doing so".

A person with a forked beard. Forked beards stood for evil and viscious persons. Anglo-Saxon, Norman warriors often had such a beard. Sweyn Forkbeard (aka "Sven Gabelbart") was King of Denmark and England around 1000. He was (btw) the son of King Harald Bluetooth (aka "Harald Blåtand Gormsen", after whom the Bluetooth communications protocol is named. Are there two bells flanking the head?

There are some extraordinary carvings. Here is a closer look onto the facade. In a line all over the facade, just above the doors, are 23 horse's heads. The heads are carved very rough, but they are all different. Why horses? I remember that horses are as well in Saint-Fort-sur-Gironde.. Above are some unique, very elegant capitals - and strange corbels!

It got replaced by the gabled wall over the western facade. There are some extraordenary carvings here. In a line all over the facade, just above the doors, are 23 horse's heads.
