Chauvigny - Saint Pierre

I have uploaded already many photos taken in Chauvigny, so I will cut it down for now. Just a few. A small community of Canons in Chauvigny was founded by the Seigneurs de Chauvigny around 1025. Bishop Isembert I of Poitiers (+ 1047) was a Seigneur de Chauvigny, as well as his sucessor. The erection of the Collegiate church started end of the 11th century. It took about a century to complete the structure. The church was in the centre of the heavily fortified stronghold, that has a long history of sieges, lootings captures and recaptures. The "Cité Médiéval" was in ruins end of the 18th century. Mid 19th century the restoration process started. Since then the interior of Saint-Pierre is known for the capitals, that are indeed extraordinary. They all have this distinctive colour-scheme of white and red. I will not uplaod them again, just "search" them in my stream. Here is a little scene from outside. A hare hunted by a dog awaited by a very strange chimaera. The creature has the head of a dog and the body of a fish. Below some snakes..

I have uploaded already many photos taken in Chauvigny, so I will cut it down for now. Just a few. The "Cité Médiéval", the upper town of Chauvigny, is situated on a promontory, overlooking the Vienne. There are the ruins of five fortresses, palaces, donjons, towers and the former collegiate church of Saint-Pierre. Chauvigny has a long history of sieges, lootings, captures and recaptures. In the early 18th century the town was nearly abandoned and in ruins. After the French Revolution, the whole place was a public quarry. The demolition stopped in the 19th century. Renovations and restorations started mid of the 19th century and saved, what still can be seen today.

The "Hôtel le Lion d'Or" is quite ok, but the restaurant is really much better than an average hotel restaurant ... and in case you have a room here, the wine is very good as well. Don´t drink and drive! Beef carpaccio with quail egg www.hotel-restaurant-le-lion-dor.fr/

Chauvigny - Le Salon Du Lavoir

The more I travelled - the more I loved launderettes, especially, when I was hiking. There is a relaxing hour to spend at least, waiting for the washing machine and another half an hour to listen to the dryer... And after that all the stuff is clean and has a nice smell.

I just cannot pass Chauvigny without stopping. But as I have already uploaded many photos from here - this is the onlyone for now. A community of Canons was founded on a promontory overlooking the valley by the Seigneurs de Chauvigny around 1025 The erection of the Collegiate church up there started end of the 11th century. The church was in the center of the heavily fortified stronghold, that has a long history of sieges, lootings, captures and recaptures. But this fortified area was not the only a part of Chauvigny, as down in the valley existed another. This part still exists all around the parish church Notre Dame, a building as well erected within the 12 century.

She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries." To the left another shepherd "PASTOR BONUS".

To the right a devil tries to cheat, holding down the balance beam. HIS E DIABOLUS is written above the devil. Next to this is a thoughtful prophet labeled BABILONIA DESERT. This probably refers to Revelation 18 : "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!" Actually the prophet looks a bit like the tired, contemplating Joseph, who can often be found near the Nativity scene. And this is near, as to the right is one of the shepherds ("PASTORES"), to whom Gabriel announces Christ's birth (around the corner).

He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: "Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel." It is hard to read, but the name SIMEON is carved in to the left.

When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh." Above the scene "GOFRIDUS MEFECIT", the signature of the medieval artist. Gofridus must have been a proud artist, otherwise he would not have signed his work on a such a prominent position.

Luke 2:8-14 "And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: "You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."

Meanwhile I have the impression, that the person in the center, holding a square object, is the Satan himself, dancing over the flames of hell. He is flanked by two devils, who grab poor human souls - and through them into the inferno. What could that square object be?
