Cologne - Bei Oma Kleinmann

Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior". The area west of the Volksgarten, near the University of Cologne, is dubbed "Kwartier Latäng" - the namesacke in Paris is the "Quartier Latin". This is the place, where the students (and other young people) get entertained in many clubs, bars and pubs. In between in the old Restaurant "Bei Oma Kleinmann", known for the best schnitzels in Cologne. Paula Kleinmann (called Oma Kleimann, Oma = granny) ) opened a restaurant here in 1949 named "Der Goldene Krug". The dishes were good and Oma Kleinmann gained some prominence. In, when nobody remembered the original name of the restaurant, it got renamed in "Bei Oma Kleinmann", the name anybody knew. Oma Kleinmann passed away in 2009, but her successors still keep up the good quality. www.beiomakleinmann.de/

In the 1820s the Prussians had erected forts just outside the city walls. 50 years later, the walls got torn down and another "protective ring" was erected far outside. One of the then useless forts was "Fort IV, dedicated to "Erbherzog Paul von Mecklenburg“. The area around the fort has long been sold to many small landowners. Starting in 1886, Wilhem Kaesen bought more than 60 small parcels of land from the owners. He transfers the 10ha area to the City of Cologne under the condition, that here a "Garden for Everybody" should be developed. The City adds another 5ha and so the "Volksgarten" came into existence. With its wide lawns, a small lake, a beer garden and even a small waterfall, the Volksgarten is still an important part of Cologne's local recreation even with "social distancing" in March.

The Volksgarten ("People's Garden") is a large public park in the Südstadt-quarte of Cologne. Most of the area was originally used for fortifications, that were built by the Prussians around 1820 and given up after the Franco-Prussian War (1870/71). Today there is a large pond, where paddleboats cruise, a beergarden - and areas, populated by many sunbathers even in October.

Volksgarten is a large public park in Cologne´s Suedstadt, erected end of the 19th century, within an area, that was was used for fortifications before. In the center is a lake - and a beergarden. Served here are (bio!) beers from the small "Brauerei Hellers". Most typical is "Koelsch", the "endemic" beer in Cologne as only local breweries are allowed to use this name, but as well "Wiess. This smooth beer is similar to "Koelsch", but not filtered.
