Adenau - St. Johannes der Täufer

29 Sep 2021 2 1 91
The town of Adenau, located in the Eifel, a mountain range stretching west to Belgium, is known since 992 when it was mentioned in a document by King Otto III under the name "Adenova". In 1162, Ulrich von Are donated his manor in Adenau to the Knights of St. John (Sovereign Military Order of Malta). Adenau thus became the third oldest branch of this order in Germany. A church dedicated to St John the Baptist probably already existed in the 10th century. When Ulrich von Are had his manor in Adenau to the Knights of St. John "his" church was probably part of the deal. In the 12th century, two side aisles were added and in the 13th century a new choir, which was used exclusively by the Knights of St John. At the end of the 15th century, the nave was vaulted. In 1908/09, the old choir and sacristy were demolished and a new building erected. The old nave was completely destroyed at the end of WWII, so that a new building was erected in 1969. Parts of the old outer walls were converted into an atrium. The old Romanesque baptismal font.

Near Adenau (btw) is the Nuerburgring, known for F1 races and the festival "Rock am Ring". The large half-timbered house in the centre was built in 1630.

Cologne - Villa Malta

02 Jun 2020 192
Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior". -- The "Villa Malta" is a castle-like structure located Rodenkirchen, a southern suburb of Cologne. The establishment was built in 1904 in order of the mayor of Rodenkirche and named after his wife "Villa Angonia". The building changed hands after WWI and was known as "Villa Maria" in the 1940s. It was acquired by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in 1971 - and since then has the name "Via Malta", though the order left again. In 1985 the villa was restructured and converted into condos.

Vouthon - Saint-Martin

Saint-Martin, the parish church of Vouthon, was erected in the 12th century and was part of a commandery of the Knights Templar. The commandery was taken over by the Knights Hospitaller ("Sovereign Military Order of Malta"). The church got restored after the damage, caused by the Hundred Years War. An explicit, ithyphallic corbel can be seen under the roof outside the church, though later prudish people tried to correct that with hammer and chisel.

There are still a few Romanesque capitals along the nave. The carvings are very rough and "basic". I´m not sure, what the person is holding. Probably not a bouquet of flowers?

Principality of Monaco

With little more than 2km² Monaco is the second-smallest independent state worldwide. Only the Vatican is smaller. Sometimes it is claimed, that the "Palazzo Malta" and the "Villa Malta", the headquarters of "Sovereign Military Order of Malta" in Rome, are the smallest state. Though the order has an own currency and issued stamps, these two buildings are not an "independent state" but a "sovereign entity".
