Adenau - St. Johannes der Täufer

29 Sep 2021 2 1 90
The town of Adenau, located in the Eifel, a mountain range stretching west to Belgium, is known since 992 when it was mentioned in a document by King Otto III under the name "Adenova". In 1162, Ulrich von Are donated his manor in Adenau to the Knights of St. John (Sovereign Military Order of Malta). Adenau thus became the third oldest branch of this order in Germany. A church dedicated to St John the Baptist probably already existed in the 10th century. When Ulrich von Are had his manor in Adenau to the Knights of St. John "his" church was probably part of the deal. In the 12th century, two side aisles were added and in the 13th century a new choir, which was used exclusively by the Knights of St John. At the end of the 15th century, the nave was vaulted. In 1908/09, the old choir and sacristy were demolished and a new building erected. The old nave was completely destroyed at the end of WWII, so that a new building was erected in 1969. Parts of the old outer walls were converted into an atrium. The old Romanesque baptismal font.

Near Adenau (btw) is the Nuerburgring, known for F1 races and the festival "Rock am Ring". The large half-timbered house in the centre was built in 1630.

Wiesbaum - St. Martin

Already in 1131 a church, dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, existed in "Wisebenne", what now is Wiesbaum. A new parish church was erected in 1928, as the old, still existing one, was not suitable any longer. Here is the oldone, erected around 1500, surrounded by the graveyard. I learned that in the 17th century a local pastor was tried and found guilty of witchcraft, whereupon he was sentenced to be burnt as a warlock

Wachendorf - Bruder-Klaus-Feldkapelle

This chapel, dedicated to Nikolaus von der Flue (aka "Brother Klaus") a Swiss hermit and ascetic, was erected 2005-2007 following a design by the internationally renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. It was donated by local family, owner of the fields around, who had met Peter Zumthor when he built the Diocesan Art Museum "Kolumba" in (near) Cologne. With the support of many volunteers this minimalist tower-like, windowless chapel was created. It is located isolated in the fields, about half an hour walk from the next parkig lot.

The chapel was inspired by the hermitage, Brother Klaus lived in for decades end of the 15th century. The building started with a tent-like structure constructed out of more than 100 spruce trunks. Around this inner construction the chapel was built by tamped concrete, what took 24 days. Later a fire was started inside, which caused the trunks to dry and peel off the concrete so that they could be removed, leaving marks on the inner walls.

Kloster Steinfeld

The first monastic settlement here took place in about 1070, the Premonstratensians, founded by Norbert von Xanten in Prémontré near Laon in 1120, settled here in 1130. In 1184 it was raised to the status of an abbey - Steinfeld Abbey. It became an important monastery, had property in Cologne and established a number of daughter houses ("filiae") including the Strahov Abbey in Prague and the Sayn Abbey, near Koblenz. The Getty Museum in Los Angeles ownes the Steinfeld Missale that was created here around 1180. The Premonstratensian abbey existed upto 1802, when it got secularized. Now this is Salvatorian convent. So the Salavatians take care of the basilica, erected between 1142 and 1150 by the Premonstratensians as one of the earliest vaulted churches in Germany. Saint Hermann Joseph von Steinfeld (1150 – 1241) lived here, a Premonstratensian canon regular and mystic. The tomb of Saint Hermann Joseph von Steinfeld. The saint was born under the name of Hermann in Cologne, but his special devotion of the Virgin earn him the name Joseph, that was added. As a boy, he spent all his free in the church St. Maria im Kapitol in Cologne. A legend claims, that as a boy he once presented an apple, saved from his own lunch, to a statue of Jesus, who accepted it. That´s why pilgrims plcae apples on his tomb.

The structure of the church is clearly Romanesque, but there are many later addons, like the Baroque pulpit and in the center Saint Hermann Joseph´s tomp, where visitors and pilgrims have lit lots of candles. www.kloster-steinfeld.de

Manderscheid - Castles

14 Nov 2017 1 1 189
The small river Lieser, that runs between the two ruined castles, once was the border between the principalities of Trier and Luxembourg. The Oberburg ("Upper Castle") and the small town of Manderscheid belonged to the Electorate Trier, the larger Niederburg ("Lower Castle") and the strong fortified valley settlement Niedermanderscheid to Luxembourg. The guards on the opposite towers watched each other very distrustfully for centuries. The Upper Castle, already mentioned in 973 as a donation to the archbishop of Trier. It got destroyed by French troops in 1673. The Lower Castle was built in the second half of the 12th century was the ancestral seat of the Manderscheid Counts, a powerful aristrocratic family in the Eifel. The Lower Castle got destroyed by French troops as well. They did the job in 1794, after the French Revolution.

Bad Münstereifel

In 720 Charlemagne´s great grandmother Bertrada had founded the Prüm Abbey, from where in 830 the Benedictine monastery "Novum Monasterium" was founded here. The abbey, owning the relics of Chrysanthus und Daria, developed into a pilgrimage destination and all around a settlemt grew. Zwentibold, illegitime son of Emperor Arnulf and King of Lotharingia, granted the abbey a minting privilege in 898. Under the Counts of Jülich a castle got erected around 1300 - and the town flourished. Today large half timbered houses line the streets. A few years ago, when the rural exodus left empty shops, a "city outlet center" was founded - and brought at least more tourists to Bad Münstereifel. www.cityoutletbadmuenstereifel.com/
