oaw[rsq] - dropped shells

06 Apr 2022 4 6 194
The red squirrel left some more evidence of his or her afternoon meal ... some hazel nut shell fragments and the skins from a few peanuts [groundnuts]. There were also a few bits from sunflower seed cases when the area was closely examined. The pine cone was untouched, although a few were found to have been stripped back to their core and others indicated that the woodpecker[s] have been after the seeds. We pick up the hard shells as a means to count of where & how many nuts are eaten on visits, and as an attempt to hide feeding evidence from potential predators.

Cheeky had at least eight hazel nuts for lunch today [13th March 2022] over a period of almost half an hour. Plus some seeds out of the nearest bird feeder. These "food wrappers" were picked up about 15 minutes after Cheeky had left the feeders and scampered up the nearby Scot's Pine tree.

Contents consumed by the visiting red squirrel. Shells collected regularly to determine consumption - as s/he maybe removing hazel nuts to eat elsewhere, this may be only an approximation Also found some shredded pine cones.
