clch - Deforestation in DR Congo [2020]

01 Jan 2022 1 79
A significant increase in the deforestation after 2012 - the rate has almost doubled, and is now almost 500,000 hectares a year, which puts the DR Congo into third place for world deforestation since 2002. Two major drivers for forest clearances are for mining operations and subsistence farming by refugees. . Not my Image ; Fair Use & public information

Another significant increase in the destruction of the Brazilian [Amazonian] rain forest. {compare to the 2020 graphic} Bolsonaro REALLY needs to get a grip on this growing environmental disaster. [and the coivid-19 pandemic]. . . Not my Image ; Fair Use & public information

clch - global deforestation [1990 - 2020]

The rate at which area has been lost to deforestation globally, have decreased in the past decade [2010 - 2020] but even so, the loss is still significant in ecological and environmental terms. This loss is not just of tropical rain forest but also of temperate deciduous woodland and higher latitude coniferous forests. . Not my Image ; Fair Use & public information

clch - South America's deforestation [2020]

01 Dec 2021 94
The rate of deforestation in the Amazon [ie Brazil] has been increasing since 2008. This is a very worrying trend and in contrast to the situation in Indonesia. The loss of trees and forest habitat, especially as a lot of fires are used in the clearing process, is very damaging [both locally and globally] to the ecology and environment. [But as happens depressingly frequently, mankind's mamon triumphs over gaia] . . Not my Image ; Fair Use & public information

clch - Tropical forest losses [2002 - 2020]

01 Dec 2021 94
That's a huge area of deforestation in less than two decades, and it will have wide-reaching affects - not just the loss of a significant carbon sink, but also habitat loss, leading to the extinction of some species. Note that a lot of the Amazonian clearances were accompanied by burning off vegetation from vast swathes of land - this recently exposed soil rapidly declines in fertility and is subject to extensive erosion. Don't forget the creation of carbon dioxide and particulates in the smoke from these fires. . . Not my Image ; Fair Use & public information

clch - Indonesian deforestation

The forests have been cleared for several reasons, the largest cause being for oil palm plantations & otehr "cash" crops, much of the timber was pulped for paper if not suitable for furniture and the like. Creating grass and scrubland was the second largest purpose, all contributing to increased greenhouse gas emissions and significant loss of biodiversity. President Widodo has, in 2021, repeated assurances that deforestation would be reversed [COP26 agreement]. . . Not my Image ; Fair use & public informtion
