AA9119 taxies out at Shannon 19/07/1980. Unlike today, American Airlines did not operate scheduled services to European airports at the time so it was quite a rare visitor. As far as I recall it was operating a cargo service for Aer Lingus. This 707 was subsequently sold to MEA -Middle East Airlines as OD-AHB in 1982 but was destroyed on the ground at Beirut during shelling of the airport in January 1987.

This was the 2nd DC-10 to be built (c/n 46501) and made its first flight in January 1971 as N101AA but was later re-registered N10DC by McDonnell Douglas. In June 1977 it was acquired by Laker Airways (G-BELO) and named "Southern Belle". Following Laker's collapse in 1982 it moved on to American Trans Air in early '83. However, it returned to the UK register as G-GCAL with Cal-Air International in February 1986. Finally. it was bought by Project Orbis (Flying Eye Hospital) in November 1991 and after extensive conversion work it entered service with them in June 1994 registered N220AU and is still in service in 2012.
