For many years, this simple but charming sign has been directing hungry travelers along U.S. 30 to the Lincoln Café in Belle Plaine, Iowa. From a 35mm print.

Who wants to join me in the Time Machine for a luncheon at this wonderfully charming café? What isn’t perfect and pleasant about it? We’ll sit at the counter or take a seat in back by the mural – it doesn’t matter.

The Chief Diner was located at 2127 Main Ave., Durango, Colorado. “Known Coast to Coast for its fine food and service – This very unique Café all hand painted by a famous Colored artist, is made from one of the first Narrow Gauge Railroad Coaches to come over the D&RGWRR. It was used in the early eighties [1880’s] by Otto Mears on his once famous Rainbow Route from Silverton to Ironton, Colo. During the early days it was attacked by Indians and there were many arrow heads buried in the wood.”
