Phrenology was a psuedo-science that ascribed certain personality traits and characteristics to the shape and disposition of one's features - notably, the skull. It enjoyed widespread popularity in the nineteenth century.
This September 1865 cover features Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant - an obvious choice given that the magazine was published in the summer just following the Union victory.

Antique copy of Demorest's Illustrated Monthly including Mme. Demorest's Mirror of Fashions from June 1865. This issue contains "The Nation In Tears," a tribute in music to the recently slain President Abraham Lincoln, along with engravings of his funeral procession and this fantastic portrait, which shows the imprint in striking relief of the music on the reverse.
