Moment of impact

What's not to love on this masterpiece of illustration by George Evans for Shock SuspenStories ? The dramatic action, the use of light and shadows to heighten the mood, the coloring, the bound man's left foot breaking the text box at lower left? Add to that the perfect logo and the E.C. pedigree, and you have yet one more jaw-dropping cover in a long line of classics. Shock SuspenStories - No. 16, September 1954 issue. Finely-rendered and high impact cover art by George Evans.

But he's hers!

John Buscema and John Romita handled the art chores for this tale of woe from one of Marvel's 1960's romance offerings, Our Love Story, and it's delightfully emblematic of their work on the more popular superhero titles. Just imagine this is a scene taken from the Coffee Bean hangout of Spiderman lore and we're waiting for Flash Thompson to walk in any moment. That, or picture the patrons in costume and it looks like a splash from an Avengers issue of the same era! Our Love Story - No. 2, December 1969 issue - Cover to follow!

Gene Colan, better known at Marvel for his work on characters like Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Daredevil, handled the layouts for this interesting splash page from one of Marvel's 1970's romance titles, Our Love Story. Our Love Story No. 8, December 1970 - Cover to follow!

We'll never meet again!

John Buscema and John Romita teamed to provide the art to this tragic tale of love lost for one of Marvel's 1970's romance titles, Our Love Story, and it just teems with their stylings. The girl could just as easily be the Silver Surfer's beloved Shalla-Bal or one of Spidey's love interests! Our Love Story - No. 2, December 1969 issue - Cover to follow!

Midge is a fool...

Skywald was one of the smaller comic publishers that tried to give Marvel, DC, Harvey, Archie and Gold Key/Whitman a run for their money in the late 1960's and 70's. Breaking through a ceiling like that is hard enough in any industry, and the comic field was no exception. Pour through many a box of oddball comics and you'll likely chance upon one of Skywald's more common western efforts. Until picking this up recently, however, I had never even seen a Skywald romance - not surprising, seeing that it lasted but four issues. Tender Love Stories - No. 1, February 1971 issue.

I can't forget you!
