The Lanxess Solutions UK Ltd, Trafford Park facility opened Dec. 24, 1939, to manufacture phosphate-based plasticizers for Geigy Colour Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Geigy SA. In 1953, the site became known as Ashburton Chemicals until another reorganization occurred and it became an operating site of Geigy (UK) Ltd. In 1970, Geigy SA merged with Ciba AG and the Trafford Park site became part of Ciba Geigy UK. In 1992, the site was sold to FMC Corporation, and in August 1999, it was sold to Great Lakes Chemical Corporation. In 2005, Great Lakes Chemical joined with Crompton to become Chemtura. The site is currently operated as Lanxess Solutions UK Ltd.
Through the years, the research facility at Trafford Park developed a wide range of new products in fine chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates, plastic additives and flame retardants, which formed the basis of its operations for several years. For the past 20 years, operations have been consolidated into flame retardants, lubrication/hydraulic fluid additives, and water-treatment chemicals.
Products include hydraulic/turbo fluids used in power generation and lubrication applications where flame retardancy is required and water-treatment additives to prevent scale in industrial water and desalination systems.
The rails are a relic of the once extensive railway system that served industries right across the Trafford Pakrk industrial estate.

Sandycroft Foundry
25 Aug 2012 |
|
In 1837, John Taylor established a foundry in Rhydymwyn to provide mining equipment to the Mold mines. In 1862 the operations were transferred to an existing foundry at Sandycroft on the banks of the River Dee. The company specialised in making machinery for the mining industry. By 1877 the business was trading as the Sandycroft Foundry and Engine Works Company Ltd. The company was very busy supplying machinery to India, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and numerous mines and collieries throughout Britain. By the 1920s, however, competition had increased significantly and in 1927 the works closed due to lack of orders.
The site was by 1942 occupied by International Electroplate Co Ltd, and is now used for steel fabrication and general engineering. The rail connection was already disused by 1967 but even today there are rails to be seen in the floor of the main building. The front of the works suffered a fire some time ago and has been rebuilt. However, the rear section seen the background of this photo s the original erecting shop with the distinctive roof trusses that can be seen in many old photos of the works.
A slight technical problem
05 Mar 2012 |
|
As we headed up the valley from Viseu de Sus the train came to a halt just outside Cozia where the track had been displaced sideways by logging tractors crossing the line. Local people heading home in the passenger coach attached ahead of the log bogies set to work and prepared the ballast so that the track could be slewed back. Within an hour the line was straight(ish) again and we went on our way.
Small mine at Sanjiazi
07 Apr 2011 |
|
The deep mines around Nanpiao are supplemented by large numbers of small drifts, particularly around Sanjiazi at the end of the western branch of the mining railway. This example is typical of the area, with a steep drift, props lying around, along with tubs and a small man riding carriage for the men.

East Buxton limekilns
14 Oct 2010 |
|
The interleaved tracks remain at the top of the East Buxton kilns along with a single tipping skip wagon. The two pots had tracks around them which allowed tipping of limestone and coal from either back or front set of rails for more acurate placement in the kiln.
Beware

The warning may no longer be necessary as the rusty rails suggest disuse of the loading facilities at the Shap Blue Stone Quarry.

Middlewood
01 Feb 2009 |
|
Middlewood is one of those rare survivals in Britain - a railway station with no road access. If you want to catch the train from here you walk along public footpaths to get there. At one time there were two stations here, as the former Macclesfield to Marple line that crossed on the bridge in the background had a rather rickety set of wooden buildings and platforms. Eventually part one of the platforms slid to oblivion down the embankment during the 1950s. That station was closed in 1960, ten years before the line itself, but the one here on the ex LNWR line to Buxton from Stockport continues to see services calling. In fact the service here is better on a Sunday than any other day of the week as nearly all trains stop rather than every other one. In the nineteenth century the land to the right was occupied by the sidings and loading chutes serving the Norbury and Middlewood collieries of Messrs Clayton and Brooke which closed in 1892.

A relic of the once extensive Liverpool dock railway system can be found at Albert dock. It's a long time since any trains ran on these tracks.

Worksop trackscape

A took a trip on the Robin Hood line to Nottingham and this required a change of train at Worksop. Looking from the platform end towards Sheffield a Lincoln bound train can be seen approaching and the Nottingham line veers of to the left in the distance.
Sunken way
20 Oct 2008 |
|
It's all Eagle1942's fault. Every time I go out and about in the hills I find myself looking for old routeways hiding in the landscape. This particular sunken way lies between Hacked Way Lane and Buxton Old Road and is seen looking northwards towards Lamaload reservoir which lies in the valley to the right of the distant woodlands. Although now boggy and filled with rushes this route must have seen the passage of thousands of feet and hooves to have created such a deep gulley. I wonder how old it is and where they were all going?
