Hindlow kilns

Maerz limekilns at the Tarmac Hindlow Quarry. The stone for burning is brought in by rail from Tunstead as quarrying has been suspended here. Tarmac is proposing to restart quarrying at the site and has been undergoing consultation on the plans.

The two Maerz parallel-flow regenerative (PFR) shaft kilns at the Buxton Lime Industries (now Tarmac), Hindlow Quarry. Production capacity of these kilns, which were installed in 1981, is around 220,000 tonnes of lime per annum. Stone for the kilns was being brought to the site from the Tunstead quarry at this time but is now quarried on site.

Turning triangle

The Cromford and High Peak Railway which wound its way through this area via sharp curves and the use of a number of inclines up which the wagons were hauled by stationary steam engines. On the opening of the Buxton to Ashbourne railway some sections were incorporated in the new line whilst others were abandoned. Here at Hindlow the new line passes through a tunnel and the old alignment is left at a higher level. On this section are the remains of a triangular section of the original railway which was used to turn wagons so that their end door was facing uphill when being run on the inclines.

The stub of the former Buxton to Ashbourne branch reaches as far as Dowlow Quarry about a mile down the line through the tunnel at Hindlow. To the right is some of the plant of the quarry that was once Beswick's limeworks, sadly no longer rail served. The limekilns are out of view to the right.

The layout at the Lhoist operated Hindlow quarry is quite cramped around the processing plant. There are two limekilns lurking behind the steam on the right.

Hindlow Tunnel

The 514 yard Hindlow Tunnel was completed in 1894 when the first section of the LNWR line from Buxton to Ashbourne was opened from Buxton as far as Parsley Hay. This section of line replaced the earlier route used by the Cromford and High Peak Railway which meandered around the hill in the background, crossing just above the tunnel portal at the Buxton end and reappearing just behind where I was standing to take this photograph. Today the single line runs only as far as Dowlow Quarry and the Hindlow limekilns. The site of Hindlow Station was a short distance towards Buxton from the far end of the tunnel.

As the light fades I set out onto the sheep-infested hillside for some night shots of the Lhoist operated Hindlow Quarry. The steam is from the hydration plant adjacent to the two limekilns. The lights in the left background are Tunstead Quarry and cement plant . Best viewed original size .

The Hindlow Quarry buildings and plant cut a stark contrast to the greenery all around. In the centre is the bridge carrying the former Buxton to Ashbourne railway which now runs as far as Dowlow for stone traffic. Hindlow Station once stood to the right of the bridge.

A clear view across the Lhoist operated quarry at Hindlow near Buxton. The distant quarry plant is the cement works and associated buildings at Tunstead whilst the plumes of smoke on the horizon are from the Lafarge cement works at Hope.
