Another picture sent to Australia to the Earps and then to me. I love the sweetness of this picture. My Auntie Pearl was a lovely person -a strong personality and a great storyteller with a wonderful laugh. I used to love to visit.

Arthur Thomas Gregory

02 Dec 2008 1 421
Arthur was engaged to marry Anna Nolan but died in 1918 in the War in France. Ten years later Anna married his oldest brother William who had been left a widower with three children when his wife died from asthma-induced pnuemonia. His youngest child - my mother - was four when they married and Anna became my dearly loved Nana. Some new information from his granddaughter Laura confirming Arthur as a 16th Lancer. Both he and his young brother George (I will post his picture soon) were killed within a month of each other. The following is the card sent to their parents: Gone from us but not forgotten Never shall their memory fade Fell while fighting for their country Now they lie in soldiers graves. In loving memory of Sergeant Arthur Thomas Gregory No 246910, 123rd Batt. R.F.A. Late 16th Lancers Who died of wounds in France May 1st 1918 Although it includes George's information I'll include that when I post his picture. May 1st was Anna Nolan's (Arthur's fiancee's) birthday. Arthur was my great - uncle.

Sent to me by my second cousin Erin in Australia who did not know initially that Pearl was my mother's sister. Recently sent to England to Pearl's children, John and Heather, who had never seen it.

Arthur Thomas Gregory - 2nd Portrait

15 Dec 2008 2 284
Sent to me by Laura whose grandfather Len was also my grandfather William's brother. This is my grandfather's next oldest brother, Arthur. Arthur, the second oldest son, was killed - actually, died from his wounds. His parents went to find out the status of their son, George, who had also been injured and discovered that both their middle sons (Arthur and George) were dead. One of the countless tragic stories. Arthur's fiancee eventually married his brother - my grandfather, William - but kept a photograph of Arthur in her jewelry box until she died.

Standing: William Gregory and Marie Rose (Hellyer) Gregory. My mother says this was taken on their honeymoon. They were married in Bethnal Green, Oct - Dec 1912, so possibly this is the following summer. Seated in front is Marie Rose's sister Kate Louise (Hellyer) and her dapper husband is Dave Robinson. they were married in Hackney in 1910. (Grateful thanks to inferno55 for a really nice photoshopping touch-up on this formerly cracked, damaged image.)
