This was my first trip back to England after emigrating. I had such happy memories of this place - it was wonderful to see it again. An old Woodlands Avenue friend and her boyfriend drove us there.

Harry King worked as an engineer at Fellows Gear Shaper Co., Springfield, Vermont. I'm wondering if this was a security badge issued during WW2.

Ada Grimshaw abt 1890. Taken in Springfield, Vermont. I believer that they often cut children's hair if they were very ill and wonder if this is why Ada has this very cropped style. I think I remember reading that cutting hair when a child was sick stemmed from a belief that hair "sapped your strength" but in reality it could have been just a practical way to stop the snarl of tangles from a long time lying on a pillow. www.adamaygrimshaw.blogspot.com

Another picture sent to Australia to the Earps and then to me. I love the sweetness of this picture. My Auntie Pearl was a lovely person -a strong personality and a great storyteller with a wonderful laugh. I used to love to visit.

Jane (Double) Major 1819 - 1912

12 Dec 2008 236
Jane Major is my Great Great Grandmother. She was born in Buxhall, Suffolk in November 1819 and she died in Stowmarket, Suffolk in Jan - March 1912 at the age of 93.(Free BMD says she was 96.) in a poorhouse - although I think she had worked there when younger. She was the daughter of Henry Double and Susan Purr also of Buxhall, Suffolk. She married William Major and they had 4 children one of whom was my great grandmother also called Jane born in 1853. She is one of my children's Great Great Great Grandmothers. The Boys>Deborah Lundbech>Hazel (Gregory) Lundbech>Marie Rose (Hellyer) Gregory>Jane (Major) (Davys) Hellyer>Jane (Double) Major

Hellyers and Earps at Stamford Hill, London, c. 19…

12 Dec 2008 299
Photo sent out to Australia and then to me from my 2nd cousin Erin Earp. From L to R: Edwin Earp - son of Maud - (known as Sonny and later as Charles - he emigrated to Australia) unknown woman labeled Bessie, Maud (Hellyer) Earp my grandmother's oldest sister, the woman sitting in the middle is (I believe) incorrectly labeled in the original as Mrs Earp but I think it is Mrs. Hellyer - Jane (Davey by her first husband) Hellyer nee Major, (so originally Jane Major) my Great grandmother and Maud's mother. The little girl in front is Maud's oldest daughter Edna, the young men in the boater hat is Maud's half brother Edwin David Hellyer and the woman to the far right is Kate Louise Hellyer, Maud's sister. Taken in Stamford Hill, London about 1910.

Woodlands Avenue Party

Brought forward for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of "There's one in every crowd." "The one" here being my Dad - a not uncommon occurrence. The Lundbechs, the Browns, the Coxs, the Laceys, Charlie Whiting, (was this taken by Eve Whiting?), the Halls and some others. About 1962. A little bit of Rayleigh, Essex, history.

Lea Bridge Road Infants School 1929

My mother (Hazel Gregory 's) first year of school at Lea Bridge Road Infants School. She is holding a doll and standing by her teacher, who bore the name , poor thing, of Miss Rumble. This is definitely better viewed large.
