Christening Day, Leyton 1954
13 Jan 2010 |
|
At my grandparents house, 79 Seymour Road, Leyton, London, England.
My christening was following a fairly secular tradition I think, since none of my family were church goers. It was customary for girls to have two godmothers and one godfather and boys to have one godmother and two godfathers. I don't know if it's still done that way - it's never been like that in the States.
My parents lived at my mother's family flat for the first six months on my life as the flat they had found in Walthamstow was being worked on. Phyl, on the left, was the owner of that flat. My mother says they considered themselves very fortunate to find that one bedroom duplex as housing was so hard to get in London, even ten years after the war.
From L to R:
Phyl (I called her Auntie Phyl - don't remember what her last name was), Hilda Allen - she worked with my Dad and was my godmother, Auntie Pearl, my mother's sister - my other Godmother, my Nana Ann Gregory, Me, in the shawl, my mother and Uncle Arthur, my mother's brother who was my Godfather.

Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: ROCKING HORSE
This is my cousin, John, taken in 1948, Leyton, London, England. He was the first baby in the family, and my mother, who was in her twenties, took many pictures of him. They remained very fond of each other all their lives.
John passed away a few months ago - several weeks after my mother died. He was a lovely, totally unique character.
Out of the blue, he had called this past Christmas, and I love that I still have our conversation and the sound of his voice in my head.
See below for another more focused, sweet pic of John.
My brother and I inherited this rather weird rocking horse. The rocker was pale blue, the seat was red, and the strange head was made of rubber!

My Nana and Grandad at their flat - 79 Seymour Road, Leyton.
First of a new set I'm going to do on Seymour Road.
My mother says my Grandad never liked this picture. It's one of the few we have where he's not dressed up with a suit and waistcoat.
I think it's a wonderful portrait of them. It's in a small frame on m desk.
Sandy, 1949

Sandy lived to be over 18 and was the cat I remember my grandparents having until we left for the States. He was a big ginger cat.
(Actually, no, now I remember that Sandy had died, and they had a black cat, "Kitty".)
Taken at the back door, 79 Seymour Road. 1949

Arthur George Gregory. Taken when he was about 10 or 11 which would make this about 1930 or 1931. This was a school picture I believe.

Sent to me by Laura whose grandfather Len was also my grandfather William's brother. This is my grandfather's next oldest brother, Arthur.
Arthur, the second oldest son, was killed - actually, died from his wounds. His parents went to find out the status of their son, George, who had also been injured and discovered that both their middle sons (Arthur and George) were dead. One of the countless tragic stories.
Arthur's fiancee eventually married his brother - my grandfather, William - but kept a photograph of Arthur in her jewelry box until she died.

My mother (Hazel Gregory 's) first year of school at Lea Bridge Road Infants School.
She is holding a doll and standing by her teacher, who bore the name , poor thing, of Miss Rumble.
This is definitely better viewed large.
