S&DJR Remembered (10) - 30 March 2013

20 Apr 2014 1 115
My pursuit of railway history continued today in Sturminster Newton in Dorset where the actual infrastructure of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR) has all but disappeared but the route and station are marked. Standing next to the Railway Gardens and The Exchange (right), The Market Column by Peter Griffin deserves inclusion in my album for its commemoration of both the railway and one of its main sources of income, the Cattle Market, formerly on the site of The Exchange. This is the reverse view through the beautiful gates to railway Gardens featured in the first picture in this set. The building on the other side of Station Road is Streeters Carpets. Although a newer extension is closer to the camera, the rest of the building is part of the former station. P1170177

My pursuit of railway history continued today in Sturminster Newton in Dorset where the actual infrastructure of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR) has all but disappeared but the route and station are marked. The premises of today's Streeters Carpets on Station Road were part of the station buildings. A more recent extension can be seen just to the left. This is the 'track' side of the station with the roadway (actually part of the Station Road car park) where the tracks would have been. P1170175

My pursuit of railway history continued today in Sturminster Newton in Dorset where the actual infrastructure of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR) has all but disappeared but the route and station are marked. The station buildings and tracks would have occupied much of today's Station Road car park from which the Trailway leads. This is where the railway would have headed south towards Shillingstone. My pursuit of railway history continued today in Sturminster Newton in Dorset where the actual infrastructure of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR) has all but disappeared but the route and station are marked. This placard and piece of track are at the top end of Railway Gardens which were created when the cutting formerly containing the tracks was filled in to create a public space. The track is, therefore, much higher than it would originally have been. In the distance, on the left, is Streeters Carpets in Station Road. Although a newer extension is closer to the camera, the rest of the building is part of the former station. P1170160

My pursuit of railway history continued today in Sturminster Newton in Dorset where the actual infrastructure of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR) has all but disappeared but the route and station are marked. This plaque is on one pillar of the beautiful gates (previous picture) at one entrance to Railway Gardens which were created when the cutting formerly containing the tracks was filled in to create a public space. The plaque appears to have originated at Washford station. P1170156
