A View With Room (for now) - 14 April 2018

This view across Leicester Square, facing south, will be very different in two years time. The cranes mark a construction site where the Odeon West End and other buildings once stood. There will be two Odeons and event and leisure facilities in the six storey basement of the Leicester Square Hotel which will rise on this spot a further eight storeys. It is due to open in 2020. On the right of this picture is part of Communications House/LSQ London. The morning light is falling on the blackbird frieze I referred to in my notes on an earlier photograph .

TKTS 360 (4) - 13 April 2018

I have indulged myself with a 360° tour of the TKTS Booth in London's Leicester Square because I like the building and because the backgrounds in an ever changing city are of interest. TKTS has stood on the south side of Leicester Square since 1992. Its predecessor, a smaller hut, was on the west side and opened in 1980 as 'The Half Price Ticket Booth'. The TKTS name was adopted in 2001 emulating the Broadway/Times Square equivalent.
In this view, the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hampshire hotel forms the backdrop to the booth and its entrance can be seen to the left of the picture. To the right can be glimpsed a construction site where once the Odeon West End and other buildings stood. Another Edwardian hotel is being built and is due to open in 2020. The Leicester Square Hotel will have eight storeys above ground and six below ground with bars and restaurants. There will be two Odeon cinemas, event and leisure facilities. It will not be linked to the Hampshire.

On the west side of the square is Communications House dating from the 1920s but refurbished (completed 2016) and now accommodating office space known as LSQ London (entrance 30 Panton Street). Retail units at street level are as diverse as All Bar One and Lego.

In this view, towards the east side of Leicester Square, the Odeon is on the left. It was closed for refurbishment. To the right, the TGI Fridays, which was once a large Chinese buffet restaurant, is below the offices of Global a media company which includes Capital Radio whose name once appeared more prominently on the building.

Leicester Square Redevelopment (2) - 30 December 2…

Whenever I go to London these days, which is infrequently, I am reminded that its size precludes me from recording everything I want to in every category which interests me. For that reason, I content myself with simply making my own small contribution to the wider world of photography.
This substantial redevelopment is in the block bounded by Swiss Court, Leicester Square, Whitcomb Street (here) and Panton Street (right).

In this view south along Wardour Street towards Whitcomb Street, the substantial redevelopment of the block between Swiss Court and Panton Street can be seen. The Met Police vehicle in the centre of the picture is Citroën Relay Mobile Police Station BU12AKV which is shown more clearly in my next picture. Leicester Square is a busy place at the best of times but I think this might have been in position as part of the preparations for New Year's Eve.
