Some of you questioned my description of it as a granite monument and I think you were right to do do. I suggested marble but I don't know. It looks like wood here, but it certainly felt like stone underfoot when I was there. I like the tree too! I think it's a chestnut but can't be sure.

From the colour of the stone I reckon this is granite from Madrid Province. but I can't be sure. The Nuevos Ministerios complex can be seen through the gap.

Jardín de Nuevos Ministerios. I think it represents watercraft but the notes were impossible to read at that angle and in the etremely bright light.
Nuevos Ministerios, Designed by renowned architect Secundino Zuarzo in the 1920s but building work was delayed by the civil war And in the 1940s, Franco wanted changes along more traditional lines so what you see is a mix of art deco and late 19th century norms, It actually seems to work!

I was intrigued by the white hemispheres, most of which seem to be incubating in their little yellow protective boxes (quite cute, really!).
But what will they be upon hatching, I wonder?
Any ideas?

I haven't a clue. Another relic parked in the Jardines de Nuevos Ministerios.
How it was. Taken from a class.

Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid.
I asked my student (a senior partner at KPMG, Spain) if I could take a photo through his office window and he said yes.

I was a little bit puzzled ... until I noticed an official looking notice (no notes or info about this cute looking little thing though) high on a wall. Then I understood. These artefacts are all placed in front of the Ministry of SIlly Walks!
(I'm kidding; its the Ministry of Transport and Public Works!)

Plaza de Lima and the Estadio de Santiago Bernabéu (undergoing reconstruction - desecration in my view - but who am I to decry 'progress'?).

An iconic stadium and home of Real Madrid. I thought I had better take a last photo before it is turned into a giant aluminium George Foreman grilling machine. (Thanks to Keith Burton for that analogy! Better than the 'Cornish pasty' I compared it to at first!). I saw the plans a few years ago - I taught English there - so I know of what I speak ...and was horrified!
OK, here it is

I sincerely believe the current building should be preserved as a cultural and architectural icon.
But I am too late as the building work has begun and Real Madrid are playing their revived season's fan-less home match programme at their training complex at Valdebebas to the north-east of Madrid and I presume they will play there until 2023.

90% of the bus station is on 3 levels below ground here. It's one of the major transport interchange stations for all points north of Madrid.

Sierra de Guadarrama, snow-capped. A view from the offices of the most important man at a major Spanish bank that i shall refrain from naming. This august personage, and a good student, kindly allowed me to take this photo, strictly against the rules of the building! Shot taken through thick glass. The tall buildings seen here are the first two of the Quatro Torres. They hide the other two. This near one is a Norman Foster design and is still the tallest building in Spain.
