Coyote and Sandhill Cranes

When we were in Yellowstone in May of 2019 we saw this Coyote stalking a pair of Sandhill Cranes along Yellowstone's lower west side. The Coyote seemed to us to be pretending no interest in the Cranes while always moving closer. The Cranes were staying just out of his reach, however, and the Coyote finally gave up the chase.

When in Yellowstone in May of 2019 we saw quite a few Sandhill Cranes. They migrate through the area in spring and autumn. This Crane was being stalked by a Coyote but unsuccessfully. The Coyote seemed to be pretending disinterest while always moving closer, while the the Cranes (there were two of them) would move just out of his reach.

We saw this Coyote in the area of Fountain Paint Pots in Yellowstone National Park. It was stalking a pair of Sandhill Cranes, though unsuccessfully.

When we were in Yellowstone early in the year we saw a lot of Sandhill Cranes, these on the west side of the lower loop. They were making a racket and soon moved into the woods where they began their mating dance, something we watched but had trouble photographing because of the surrounding trees. The last inset was the only decent photo I had of their mating ritual. When we first saw them and before they moved off into the trees, they were engaged in "unison calling," described elsewhere as a "synchronized and complex duet." Their calls were very loud and could be heard over a long distance.

Photographed on the west side of Yellowstone National Park, these Sandhill Cranes were engaged in "unison calling" a ritual in which male and female stand together and call to each other in a "synchronized and complex duet" before moving off into the woods where they began their mating dance.

We saw these Sandhill Cranes in Millenium Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but I did not get very good photos. This was the best of the lot.

This was the first time I'd seen Sandhill Cranes. They are not found in Washington, as far as I know, and these were photographed in Wisconsin as we traveled through that state last autumn.

Italian Flag at Olympic Village

In Explore February 20, 2010, #387, but not picked up by Scout. Thanks to Boshaft for finding it. For Valter. This was photographed from the Cambie Bridge in Vancouver overlooking the Olympic Village. Most of the flags were hanging on the sides of buildings, but the Italian flag was hanging above them all on this huge crane. We speculated that it was there because the last winter Olympics had been in Turin, Italy, or that some of the athletes had been daring enough to climb the crane and hang their flag there. Dennis suggested that perhaps the crane operator was Italian. You may take your pick of explanations.
