Traveling south on the east side of the lower main loop from the Mud Volcano area of Yellowstone, one follows the Yellowstone River down to its source in Yellowstone Lake and the junction of the loop with the east entrance road. This photo shows the Yellowstone River at Nez Perce Ford with Pelican Cone in the background. The ford is named for the Nez Perce Indians who crossed there under Chief Joseph during the Nez Perce War of 1877. The inset shows Sandhill Cranes photographed in the same area.

This is Hayden Valley, the valley of the Yellowstone River, and a very scenic area of Yellowstone National Park. It is also a wonderful place to look for wildlife, especially Bison and Elk.

Hayden Valley is the valley of the Yellowstone River which runs from south to north through the valley. The valley is a wonderful place to see wildlife and is scenic in its own right.

We have been traveling round the lower loop of Yellowstone's main road starting at the west entrance and heading clockwise around the upper west side of the loop and the across the north to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Now we had south along the east side of the loop and come to Hayden Valley, a great place to watch for wildlife and a beautifully scenic area upriver from the canyon. These photos were taken at different times of the year and most of them have Amethyst Mountain in the background, if I am not mistaken.

This is Hayden Valley on the southwest side of Yellowstone National Park. The river is the Yellowstone and the valley is notable both for its scenery and its wildlife.
Lower Yellowstone Falls from Artist's Point

These photos were all taken from the South Rim Drive along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and from Artist's Point at the end of the drive. Artist's Point afford the most distant view of the Lower Falls as they drop into the canyon and is well named for its scenic view both of the falls and of the canyon. The photos were taken in May which is still winter in Yellowstone and in fact some of the park roads were not open yet in May.
These are the last photos I'll be posting of the canyon and of the falls. We'll be getting back on the lower loop of the main road and heading down the east side of the loop to Hayden Valley. Hayden Valley is one of the more scenic areas of the park and a good place to look for wildlife, especially bison and elk. We'll be following the Yellowstone River upriver from this point, therefore, through this peaceful valley..

These are the Upper Falls of the Yellowstone River, photographed from the North Rim Drive, which follows the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone east to several viewpoints from which the Upper and Lower Falls are visible.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with its two great waterfalls is at Canyon Junction, the east junction of the two loops of Yellowstone's main road. There are two side roads there, the North and South Rim Drives that follow the canyon far enough to get good views of both falls. These are the Upper Falls. The viewpoint from which the last inset was taken is just visible above the falls on the right.

This is the yellow rock, its color the result of hydrothermal activity, that gives Yellowstone National Park its name. The rock is visible in many parts of the park but especially in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River where this photo was taken.

Traveling around the lower loop of Yellowstone National Park's main road, we've come to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and to the great falls of the Yellowstone River, Upper and Lower. Coming from Norris Junction we traveled east around the top of the loop for about 12 miles to Canyon Junction where the west sides of the upper and lower loops meet. Canyon Junction is one of the main tourist areas of Yellowstone and has a store, a campground and a visitors' center. From there one can explore the rims of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and see the Upper and Lower Falls from different viewpoints. We are following the north rim drive in these photos and just a little way to a side road and trail that bring us to the brink of the Upper Falls. The falls themselves are not visible here, only the river above the falls and the mist and spray from the falls. This photo and the other insets were all taken from the viewpoint at the end of the short trail. My next photos will be from a bit further east and will show the falls.

This is the view from the brink of Upper Yellowstone Falls. Along the north rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and just a short distance from Canyon Village, there is a side road and short trail to this viewpoint where the water of the Upper Falls crashes into the canyon below.

We are following the upper loop of the main road through Yellowstone National Park and following it counter-clockwise. This photo was taken at about 3:00 on that loop from one of the many pull-offs above the Yellowstone River. The crumbling cliffs with their basalt columns are the outstanding feature here, the cliffs colored by older thermal activity. It is these cliffs, found all along the Yellowstone River, that give the park its name.

These basalt columns and the yellow crumbling stone below them are typical of the canyon through which the Yellowstone River runs and give the whole park its name. The photo was taken from the upper loop, east side, of the main road through Yellowstone.
