Before traveling to Normandy we were in England for a week for a conference. The conference was in Shropshire and we spent a day before the conference in Shrewsbury and in the Shropshire Hills. I had long wanted to visit Shropshire to see the abbey and the castle after reading the Cadfael Chronicless of Ellis Peters, set in Shrewsbury in the 12th century during the Anarchy and featuring a monk at the abbey, Brother Cadfael. This photo was taken from the castle walls, from Laura's Tower, and overlooks part of the town of Shrewsbury and the River Severn.

Kinbane Castle

Kinbane or Whitehead Castle was built on a limestone promontory on the north coast of Northern Ireland in the sixteenth century by the MacDonnells of Antrim. It was first the home of Colla MacDonnell and later of the MacAllisters. Only the gatehouse and a few sections of wall remain and the castle can be reached only by a long series of steps down the cliff behind. We visited Kinbane and number of other places the last day of our stay on the north coast.

Restormel Castle, Cornwall

Restormel Castle is situated on the River Fowey near Lostwithiel, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is one of the four Norman castles of Cornwall, the others being Launceston, Tintagel and Trematon.
It was built in 1100 in the typical motte and bailey style and is a perfect example of military architecture of its period, and one of the finest in England. The castle belonged to the Cardinhams in the 12th century, until Andrew de Cardinham's daughter married Thomas de Tracey, who owned the castle until 1264, after which it went to Simon de Montfort and to Henry III's brother, Richard of Cornwall. Richard died in 1271, and his son Edmund in 1300. From 1337 it became one of the 17 Antiqua maneria of the Duchy of Cornwall.
Restormel has seen action only once during its long history, when Charles I's forces drove out the Parliamentarian garrison during the Civil War.
