This tiny orchid species is from Ecuador and grows at high elevations. It was once classified as a Masdevallia and belongs to the group of Central and South American orchids known as Pleurothallids. The plant, shown here, is only 2 cm tall, less than an inch, and the flowers are huge in comparison, nearly two inches in size. Thew flowers have a sparkling crystalline texture. Once classified with Masdevallia, Trisetella hoeijeri belongs to a genus of tiny plants, most of which have tiny, reddish-brown flowers with short yellow tails. This plant is less than an inch tall but the flowers are one and a half inches from tip to tip.
