Dendrobium agathodaemonis is very closely related to Dendrobium cuthbertsonii and considered to be the same species by some, this species having very thin growths and flowers without the dark lip markings of Dendrobium cuthbertsonii. It is only a couple of centimeters tall and the flowers around three centimeters long. Like its close relative, it is from the mountains of New Guinea and is cool growing.

Dendrobium vexillarius is a small high-altitude species from New Guinea. It belongs to the Oxyglossum section of the genus Dendrobium, all of which have similarly-shaped flowers but in a rainbow of bright colors. In most cases with the flowers in this section the flowers are extremely long lasting, some lasting up to a year.

Dendrobium petiolatum belongs to the Oxyglossum section of the genus Dendrobium, and is typical of the species in that section with colorful, multi-colored, very long-lasting flowers. As with most of the species in that section, it is from the highlands of New Guinea. In this photo the orange part of the flower is the tip of the lip. The flowers are produced at the top of the older, leafless pseudobulbs.

Dendrobium cuthbertsonii is one of the most desirable miniature orchids, with long-lasting flowers, a rainbow of colors and huge flowers on a tiny plant. It is from the mountains of New Guinea and requires cool temperatures and high light.

Dendrobium agathodaemonis is a tiny orchid species from the mountains of Papua New Guinea. The growths, visible in this shot, are less than two centimeters tall but the flowers, which last six months or longer, are much larger. It is closely related to Dendrobium cuthbertsonii but lacks the darker markings of the lip of that species. It requires very good light and cool temperatures.

This is another high-altitude orchid species from New Guinea. It has the typical shape and bright colors of the section Oxyglossum to which it belongs. The nectary or spur is visible at the base of the flower and there is a picture of the plant with its flowers in the inset. The plant is three inches tall and the individual flowers an inch.

A new addition to my collection, this clone is a brilliant orange with good shape and size. I have red, pink, purple, light yellow and a number of bicolors but had no orange. Now I just have to find a white clone. This is the tiny plant with large, long-lasting flowers that I have posted many times before.

I've posted pictures of this species before, but thought I'd post another. This is probably my favorite orchid and I have it in many different colors, a couple of which are shown below. The species is from the highlands of New Guinea and is one to two inches tall with flowers that are huge for the size of the plant. Not only does it come in a rainbow of colors, but these amazing flowers will last six to eight months. The photo shows the size of the flowers in relation to the plant, the beautifully pebbled foliage and the compact growth habit. It is growing in a two and half inch pot and has even more flowers now than in the photo.
Dendrobium laevifolium

|
Dendrobium laevifolium belongs to section Oxyglossum of the genus but is a warm-growing species, one of the few in that section. It ordinarily has bright purple-pink flowers, but this clone is unusual in that the flowers are a pale peach color and are smaller than other plants of the species, 2cm long. The plant is also smaller, only 4.5cm. The species is from New Guinea, the Solomon Island, Bougainville and other South Pacific Islands.

This is another cool-temperature Dendrobium from the highlands of New Guinea. The flowers bloom down among the pencil-like leaves and this plant had over a hundred flowers the last time it bloomed (actually it is still blooming since the flowers last four to six months). The colors are typical of the Dendrobiums in the Oxyglossum section, bold and in striking combinations.

The similarity between this species and the species shown in the previous post should be obvious and they are sometimes considered to be synonymous. This has dark marking on the lip, however, and a different growth habit with thicker and taller growths and pebbled leaves. Both are from the highlands of New Guinea and require cool temperatures and high humidity. The plant here is growing in a 2.5 inch pot and has very large and long-lasting flowers. It actually has two plants growing in the same pot. The flowers on the left side have a darker lip, white markings and a slightly darker flower color. They are now growing separately.

This is a tiny plant, not even an inch tall, with one inch flowers that last upwards of six months. It is from Papua New Guinea and grows at high elevations, preferring cool temperatures and high light. It belongs to the Oxyglossum section of the genus Dendrobium. I grew this from a tiny seedling.

This orchid species is from Papua New Guinea and belongs to the Oxyglossum group of Dendrobiums. The species varies greatly in size, with this plant 8-10 inches tall and another plant we own only about 2 inches tall. These flower opened a bright pink and gradually faded to the more muted shades shown here. They have ample time to do that since the flowers last for many months.
