This view across Crater Lake in Oregon has Mount Scott in the background. There is a trail to the top of the mountain and a lookout there, but the road on that side of the crater was still closed by snow when we were there in June.

The rim of the crater at Crater Lake National Park is at an altitude of 7-8000 feet (21-2400 m) and so the scenery and plants all alpine and the trees near the timberline. This tree was at one of the lookouts along the west rim drive.

We did not see a lot of birds in Crater Lake National Park but did see and photograph this Clark's Nutcracker at one of the turnouts along the West Rim Drive.

This is Crater Lake in Oregon with Wizard Island on the right. Crater Lake is an old volcanic cone that has filled with water over the millennia and Wizard Island is a newer volcanic cone that has pushed up from the bottom of the crater. The photo was taken from the West Rim Drive. The East Rim Drive was not yet open at the time due to snow.

This is the newer volcanic cone of Wizard Island in Crater Lake in Oregon. The cone can be visited by boat in the summer months, but none of the park services were open yet when we were there and the West Rim Drive had just been cleared of snow.

Here is Wizard Island in Crater Lake, Oregon, from the south rim of the crater. We had hoped to drive the whole rim of the crater but discovered that the East Rim Drive was still snowed in.

Because Crater Lake is at such a high elevation the wildflowers were just starting to bloom when we were there the middle of June. These Lupine were photographed along the road as we left the park and headed for the Oregon Lava Lands. I am not at all certain of the identification but am posting them as Silvery Lupine, Lupinus argenteus.

These Spreading Phlox were photographed in Crater Lake National Park where the earliest spring wildflowers were just beginning to bloom after snow melt.

This is another spring wildflower photographed in the area of Crater Lake National Park where spring was just beginning when we were there in June. I believe it to be Thyme Buckwheat, Eriogonum thymoides.

Leaving the Siskyous of southwestern Oregon we made our way to Crater Lake, hoping to get there for the sunset, but we misjudged the time and arrived after dark. So instead of watching the sunset we found a place to stay the night and visited the crater the next morning. The park was still partly snowed in and the road on the east rim closed. We were unable to do all of the rim drive as a result but spent plenty of time enjoying the amazing scenery and another beautiful day.

On our June trip through Oregon and northern California we visited Crater Lake and this was the crater early in the morning as the sun came up.

This photo gives some idea of the snow we found at Crater Lake National Park when there in June. The West Rim Drive had been opened but the East Rim Drive was still closed as were the visitors' center and lodge.

There is a Crater Lake in Oregon, part of a national park there, but this is a much smaller lake in Washington in the North Cascades. We hiked here last autumn with friends and it involved more bushwacking than hiking. We lost the trail several times and had to rely on my GPS to get us to the lake. I had, in fact, gotten lost on a previous attempt to find the lake on a foggy day. This photo was taken by my wife.

ThIS is not the famous Crater Lake in Oregon but a small alpine lake in Washington in the North Cascades near Skykomish. The photo was taken on a recent hike to the lake with several friends.

On a trip last summer down the Oregon coast to the California redwoods and back, we stopped at Crater Lake in central Oregon, arriving there at sunset one evening and leaving before noon the next day. Before leaving we drove nearly all the way around the crater.
Crater Lake is a National Park that features an old volcanic crater now filled with water. The old volcanic cone, now gone, is known as Mount Mazama, and the crater, with its cinder island, Wizard Island, is six miles across and the lake nearly 2000 feet deep, a fantastic place.
