Mountain Goat

There's a story to go with this photo. We were hiking the Hidden Lake trail at Logan Pass in Glacier National Park, when we saw several mountain goats, a female and her kid, near the trail. We photographed them, but they moved off through the trees. Suddenly reappeared behind us, crossing the trail. I was at the back of the group and had stopped to get another photo when the female turned toward me, just as I took this photo. I do not know if she was threatening me, but I beat a hasty retreat, as did some of the others.

Mountain goats photographed along the Hidden Lake trail in Glacier National Park, Montana. We had to dodge them in several cases, since there were quite a few of them and they were moving across the trail and around the area and can be dangerous.

These are not the best photos but this is a Black Bear we saw along the Window Trail in Big Bend's Chisos Basin while hiking there. The bear was digging for something when we first saw him but soon turned his attention to us and we quickly moved on. We saw him again a little further down the dry creek bed as we hiked a long it.

This Black Bear was along the Window Trail in the Chisos Basin of Big Bend National Park. We managed to get a couple of quick photos but moved on for fear of disturbing him, though Black Bears are not especially dangerous.

This is a Mountain Goat kid photographed in Jasper National Park in 2014. A flock of goats was feeding along the road and we were able to get some photos of them. The other photo is of some young Bighorn Sheep, also photographed in Jasper.

The photos I'm posting today are a bit of a miscellany. This Mountain Goat was photographed in Jasper National Park in Alberta on a 2014 trip through Kootenay, Banff, Jasper and Robson.
Bear Tracks

My wife photographed these a little way from our camp at Robson Pass. They appear to be Black Bear tracks and were near the lake in the previous photo where the bears apparently came to drink. There were tracks everywhere by the lake but we saw no bears during our time at Robson Pass.

This baby Mountain Goat was photographed in Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada along the Icefields Parkway. We have a daughter and family in Edmonton and are often up that way and seldom travel there without seeing an abundance of wildlife.
Western Skunk Cabbage

Western Skunk Cabbage, Lysichiton americanus, is a plant of wet and boggy areas. It lives up to its name, emitting a foul odor when in bloom. It is a very common plant and blooms early in the spring, but the leaves continue to grow and persist throughout the summer. This example was photographed in the swampy areas around Lake Padden.

We've been traveling the past week through the Canadian Rockies, camping, hiking and sightseeing. We've been through Kootenay, Banff and Jasper National Parks and Mount Robson Provincial Park and are now for a while in Edmonton visiting children and grandchildren. We saw a group of these Mountain Goats in Jasper two days ago and stopped for pictures.

This is a female Black Bear photographed along the highway in Mount Robson Park. In the picture above she is watching her cub who was with her and both of them are shown in the picture below. She was wet from foraging in the stream along the road but even with her cub there paid no attention to the cars that had stopped on the shoulder to watch. The Black Bear, Ursus americanus, (not always black) is found all across northern North America.

Narceus americanus

In Explore January 14, 2012, #280.
This thing was huge, about four inches long! We found it on one of our hikes in Turkey Run State Park in Indiana and have since identified it as the North American Millipede, Narceus americanus. We've also learned that it was a good thing we didn't touch it, since it is able to release a liquid that can burn the skin. Photographing it was a particular challenge since we were in a dark area of the forest and it moved rather quickly (who wouldn't with a thousand legs?). This was the best picture I got and if you look at it large you can even see the compound eye.
Whenever I see one of these many-legged creatures I remember a poem I learned as a child and which I've since learned comes in different versions. This is how I learned it:
A centipede was happy – quite!
Until a frog in fun
Said, "Pray, which leg comes after which?"
This raised her mind to such a pitch,
She lay distracted in the ditch
Considering how to run.

Another photo of my wife's from our Fragrance Lake hike. There are two things she can't pass up, a fungus or a Skunk Cabbage when it's in bloom. I just hope that doesn't say anything about me.
