Calypso bulbosa var. occidentalis

These were photographed near Leavenworth, Washington, at Chiwaukum Creek where we did some hiking last month. These were growing everywhere along the creek, often in clumps, and this is just one of the many photographs we took there. This is the Western Fairy Slipper, different in coloration from the Eastern variety. Both varieties grow in our area, but this variety is found only in the Pacific Northwest. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/07/c...

One more picture of the Western Fairy Slipper growing at Chiwaukum Creek near Leavenworth. At this location they were often found growing clumps of three or four plants, a fairly rare site, though in a few places we have seen them covering the ground. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/07/c...

Chiwaukum Creek Trail

The first part of the trail along Chiwaukum Creek is an old Forest Service Road that appears to have been part of a park at one time, but is now barricaded to vehicles but still accesible to hikers. It is only when one has gone several miles that there is opportunity to follow an actual trail through the woods and along the creek. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/07/chiwaukum-c...

In Explore August 1, 2001, #375. We hike the Chiwaukum Creek trail every year for two reasons, to see the Fairy Slippers and to see the Mountain Roses, Lewisia tweedyi, which bloom at about the same time there. These huge, softly colored flowers are one of Washington State's most beautiful treasures. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/07/chiwaukum-c...

I have not been able to identify this with certainty. I believe it is a fungus in the group Sarcosphaera, probably Sarcosphaera coronaria, but am not sure. It was found growing along Chiwaukum Creek near Leavenworth, Washington, but we have seen it many other times when hiking in the Northwest. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2011/07/chiwaukum-c...
