Friezland rest

Join me on our regular Greenfield round, halting here for a moment to take in this splendid view over the area known as Friezland up to Lydgate. The stretch we are currently walking is along the very old railway line, now a linear park towards the large villages of Greenfield and Uppermill. We will return after around another 7km, a little way beyond those cottages along the canal.

Have a great day

A springtime sun shot from the lane going up to my local Dovestones reservoir. I have walked over here countless times and taken photos before but this looked a little different with the shadows and new paint.
Enjoy the weekend
Canal view at Greenfield

A summer view from the Huddersfield canal at Friezland in the village of Greenfield towards Pots & Pans and Alderman’s Hill. The cygnets make a nice foreground subject but usually there is the odd canal barge moored around here too.

A rather nice sight as we walk along the canal side at Greenfield. They are joined by their friends Canada Goose and pigeon. The one on the left is giving me ‘The eye’.

HFF, enjoy the weekend.

Fenced roof

Today I have chosen another fence taken a little while back when the leaves of the trees were still golden. We are walking along the Huddersfield canal in Greenfield when I spotted this. Maybe the owner of this building (not a house) had fears of people scrambling on top of the roof from the wall, falling off then suing. Such is life here nowadays.
Enjoy the weekend.
December mist from Friezland
19 Dec 2021 |

|
December often gives us some morning mist over here in Saddleworth. Another of our twice weekly walks brings us past this farmland in the area known as Friezland, where the farmer has decided that giving land over to holiday caravans is more profitable than farming. As a former caravaner I can sympathise with both scenarios here. For the present these caravaners can enjoy with me this wonderful misty scene.

A rural Autumn

The last of my Autumnal photos of yesteryear now, shows another local scene. Taken on a very cold morning we are not far from water here hence the presence of more mist than normal. The horses are needing some protection against the cold in this weather and they take little notice of the Canada Geese that seem to be on the increase around here.

Rest-up in Greenfield.

Autumn, at just a short ride from my home can be most rewarding, for here at the Huddersfield canal we see some gorgeous Autumnal lighting giving the whole scene a look of the old masters. The narrow-boat takes a rest before a possible trip towards the Ashton Basin and two other canal systems. If it went up towards the hills here, it would shortly reach Diggle and the famous Standedge Tunnel under the moors to Marsden in Yorkshire.
Another from my Panoramio collection.

ps Greenfield is the name of the big village here.
Man and light
19 Nov 2020 |

Man’s creations in these buildings vie for attention against the might of nature’s light. The mist in the valleys has risen just near the top of the foot hills of the Pennine moors and the sky above is beginning to let the sun though and find the gaps. But for us here, let’s forget about technicalities and just enjoy the spectacle of this wonderful sight.
Full screen essential.
Misty day on the canal

As autumn turns to winter we see here the classic results of cold ground temperatures alongside warmer air. Who cannot resist a run around with one's camera to try and capture such scenes as this. Taken on the Huddersfield canal at my local village of Greenfield in what promised to be the start of a wondrous morning of light and mist for me.

A colourful Autumn look at my local canal here at Greenfield near Oldham in Northern England. Its a Sunday afternoon and a time to enjoy these trees and the canal paths whilst the leaves are still there. A reminder here of the canals of Holland maybe :)

The magic hills of Dovestones

It’s said that once in every one hundred years; four extra hills can be seen looking down to the reservoir below to the right. These are of course ‘magic hills’ covered in deep white snow that are sometimes there for only minutes and you know, you could swear that they are moving!
Before you cry,” but these are only misty clouds you fool”, I ask you to look carefully, are you really sure about that?

HFF, have a great weekend.
A Chew fence

A refreshing look at one of the many gullies in the Chew Valley of Saddleworth . Why these fences are here, I can never understand as there is neither livestock nor bigger wild animals here. Probably just remnant’s of times gone by
HFF, enjoy this Good Friday and Easter weekend.

Since we don't appear to be having any real snow this winter, here is a shot taken a few years back. Another from the Saddleworth area, taken just above Chew reservoir. It was a cold long walk back to my car but quite a few photos taken like this.

Over here we can get some snow with blue skies now and again. Here is such a scene taken on one of my higher reservoir walks a year or so back, called Chew Reservoir near my favourite Dovestones reservoir in Greenfield. 2018 was a bleak time for this high area –it being devastated by moorland fires in the drought. That will take many years to recover but snow like this hides most things. Enjoy
As usual, best viewed full screen on black.
I wish you all, A Wonderful New Year and HFF, Herb

Dovestones from high

A view of my favourite reservoir from Saddleworth Moor. In the background one can the village of Greenfield and Mossley towards the town of Oldham here in Lancashire, UK. The snow still lingers after a downfall some five days ago testifying to the lower temperature at its height here. Quite a nice climb up too. Enjoy
