Fences at Saltburn.

A very quiet promenade walk on this Easterly resort. Even though the weather was cold, a couple still take time for a nice sit down. Enjoy full size and have a great week.

Son Marroig fence

18 Sep 2020 44 66 418
The Wonders of Mallorca: Deia – Son Marroig This wonderful structure belongs to what is now the museum and grounds of ‘Son Marroig’, a beautiful 19th century manor that was owned by the Austrian Habsburgs. It was an emblematic possession in Deia where Archduke Ludwig Salvator lived. From here a wonderful garden path leads us to a trail down to the sea far below where more wonderful views and a fabulous little restaurant awaits. See PiPs for more view in and out. HFF, enjoy your weekend in safety.

HFF - Anybody for a boat ride?

11 Sep 2020 53 61 420
Another Loweswater fence shot for you here. In fact this is the same fence as in my last HFF offering (see Pip). This view west, towards our west coast beyond the hills has none of the exciting high vistas as can be seen to the other end behind me but I think you will agree that it is quite agreeable all the same. HFF and I wish you all, a safe weekend, Herb

Spiral Fence

28 Aug 2020 43 62 416
A first holiday for many months brings me to the English Lake District. Here at Cogra Moss near Ennerdale Water I spot this twisty-turny fence reminding me a little of a cork-screw. All around me, beauty and isolation –what more can we ask for in these strange times. HFF. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Summer of 2020

07 Aug 2020 40 51 307
As we walk past fields of glorious yellow, we see and feel the beauty of our world again. Even the damp fence post seem to reflect the yellows too, but in actual fact, on closer inspection one can see it is in fact yet more of the yellow heads dancing around in the foreground breeze. Now let our eyes and mind meander along to the gate on the right and simply Enjoy! The yellow flowers are 'Ragwort' (senecio jacobaea), a semi- poisonous nuisance weed –that is very bad for livestock, although it tastes so bad that animals are repelled by it. It thrives with other insects though, so good for nature in general. HFF. Let’s have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Lockdown Mk2

31 Jul 2020 31 56 311
Back on our older further afield local walks we pass this series of fences to a school. I always think it a great shame that our schools should be fenced liked prisons, but that is England today. A reminder too of our present re-imposition of tighter restrictions here in my home town of Oldham, North West England where we too feel imprisoned. HFF. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Winter mist at Lees

Just a stroll from my home, this fenced bend attracts me like a moth to flame. Taken on the onset of our first snowfall of the winter of 2014/15

A Wintery Wonderland fence

25 Jan 2019 63 99 744
Just minutes from my house sits an old railway line. Long since converted into a liner park walk. Lined with fences and trees, now and again it is struck by beautiful low side lighting. Mix that up with one of the first hoarfrost of the season and green leaves on the evergreens and we end up with a painting of our Winter here in Oldham. I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb A must, for full screen viewing!

Rails, fences and steam in Devon

18 Jan 2019 36 76 669
Enjoy this oldie seen at the South Devon Railway station at Buckfastleigh taken some twelve years back. See here the GWR 5542, a Collet 4500 Class 2-6-2T (Tank Engine) that was built at Swindon in 1928 to a design by Churchward. If it looks rather unusual, that’s because another steam engine is just poking its nose out in front of this too. I think you will agree, a rather enjoyable shot of fences even without the engine. Enjoy full size on black. HFF, have a great weekend.

The magic hills of Dovestones

11 Jan 2019 60 89 878
It’s said that once in every one hundred years; four extra hills can be seen looking down to the reservoir below to the right. These are of course ‘magic hills’ covered in deep white snow that are sometimes there for only minutes and you know, you could swear that they are moving! Before you cry,” but these are only misty clouds you fool”, I ask you to look carefully, are you really sure about that? Enjoy full size on black. HFF, have a great weekend.

White Winter Wonderland

23 Feb 2020 30 35 299
Since we don't appear to be having any real snow this winter, here is a shot taken a few years back. Another from the Saddleworth area, taken just above Chew reservoir. It was a cold long walk back to my car but quite a few photos taken like this. Enjoy full screen

Chew reservoir in Winter fence.

04 Jan 2019 49 82 535
Over here we can get some snow with blue skies now and again. Here is such a scene taken on one of my higher reservoir walks a year or so back, called Chew Reservoir near my favourite Dovestones reservoir in Greenfield. 2018 was a bleak time for this high area –it being devastated by moorland fires in the drought. That will take many years to recover but snow like this hides most things. Enjoy As usual, best viewed full screen on black. I wish you all, A Wonderful New Year and HFF, Herb

Ramped fence

17 Jul 2020 42 56 295
A view of the Digley Reservoir overflow. This reservoir is the bigger of two in a series near the Pennine village of Holmfirth. We visited this area last December, well before lock-down and have not had the chance to go back yet. A rather ornate fence and gate to this and guessing how deep that hole is, a good precaution. The gate, another HFF shot in PiP. HFF, enjoy the weekend.

Welcome to Mauritius.

Enjoy the light and grandeur of this wonderful spot taken on the stern of our Cruise ship the P&O Aurora. ‘2014 - on our ships arrival into the harbour at its capital Port Louis, on the west coast of this Indian Ocean gem, we looked forward to a day’s sightseeing and a coastal catamaran adventure. A great day with many photos taken, all in the past now. - We had sailed a long way to get here from Sri Lanka, almost 4000km on the Indian Ocean in one jump, now we prepare to depart for the next step, a shorter hop of just 1700km to the Island of Reunion and then 4500km more to the South Africa city of Port Elizabeth.' Three PiPs of the wider island. Nice full screen. HFF and enjoy your weekend.

Grotton fences

12 Jun 2020 35 81 268
This shows one of the ways that we take on our isolation exercise walks. It’s about a mile or so from my home near the large hamlet of Grotton. This small valley area had several old mills along the riverside –long since gone now but you can still see here some of the river modifications that they needed. An old lodge (reservoir used for the steam engines) was located just to the left of the metal fenced pathway. HFF, enjoy your weekend

Sparrow on fence

19 Jun 2020 36 82 267
“Mummy, it’s awfully high up here!” Seen from my house window, looking down on our panel fence. Behind, is a pine tree that our sparrows like to nest in. There seems to be at least three of these young fledglings around, which considering the harassment that the sparrow family get from the many magpies, is very good. HFF, enjoy your weekend

On an Old Rugged Cross…

26 Jun 2020 44 66 371
Looking like a rustic cross on its side here, is part of the fence to the back of our Devonshire cottage we hired last year. To the back of that were vast fields of wheat that rattled in the breeze but unfortunately not a red poppy in sight. The brown rusty leaves on here, old Ivy I think, were a bonus. Ps –maybe like me, you will now have that wonderful song of the same name in your head. If not, this might help: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JS9P8d2iOc HFF, enjoy your weekend

Memories of Tuscany: Fenced view to Volterra

03 Jul 2020 41 58 421
Another in my ‘Memories of Tuscany’ series here. We have now left the iconic hilltop town of Volterra but it can still be seen here high on a plateau in the background hills. Before us is the typical landscape of Tuscany framed by a gap in this old wooden fence. Of course the reddish flowers give our eyes a base to start from. Best full screen –of course :) HFF and enjoy your weekend.
