The World to the West

The World to the West
For World Photography Day I thought I would see how much of the world I could get into one photo without a trip into space. So walked up to an easily attained height on Cown Edge and this view west at Coombes Rocks

I like this photo but the visibility beyond the city of Manchester is poor. In good conditions it is easy to see the Liverpool’s 2 Cathedrals build on higher ground than most of the city.

Not in this photo but the one I imagined to the South West it is sometimes even possible to to see the highest mountains in North Wales.

So a reasonable effort in the circumstances.

This is taken with my reserve camera a Fujifilm XE-1 with Film simulation of Fuji Velvia film.

ColRam, Eunice Perkins, Trevor King, Loose_Grip/Pete and 8 other people have particularly liked this photo

On a clear day you can see forever... This was obiously not the case, but I love it anyway

What a great idea for the event! I love hearing how some people plan in advance the concept for their photo.

And the photo really does show a great deal of the world all at once. You may be wishing for better visibility, but from my perspective I think the balance of what is clear and what is not is just right - then the clouds balance the rest out. I think it's beautiful.

I don't use Fuji cameras, so have never heard of the Film simulation you speak of. I love that! I rarely take film anymore, but always love it, so a simulation would be cool to have for me.

Do you ever pick up this reserve camera of yours just to be able to use that simulator?

Thanks for promoting World Photography day on Ipernity it really did lift the spirits.

I have used Pentax cameras from the late 1970s and not many of them in total. All have lasted many years and I still have 4 including one a compact (my first digital bought 2004) that still works as new. In the 35mm film days I was drawn to the Fuji Velvia reversal film as it was promoted as the landscape photographers favourite.

I bought the Fuji camera in 2013 just before buying a replacement Pentax DSLR body and yes that was because of the Film simulation and a wide angle lens. Its always been a good fun camera but my most enjoyable photography is being put for a walk and having the flexibility of a Zoom lens the 55-300 range allows for reasonable Landscape photos and the opportunity to pick out something in the distance, the real joy is wildlife but to do that well a much bigger lens helps and I never made that purchase.

More often now I choose not to carry the weight of all the equipment and walk with binoculars and iPhone which I will probably be doing in a few minutes …. The sun is rising here!

Thanks Colin

I'm so glad our event is such a positive thing for you (and many others)! You're very welcome.

I guess because I wasn't ever much of a landscape photographer I never knew about all the things you talk about with the film and cameras. Thanks for sharing that, very interesting your personal history with it and the general information.

I totally understand not wanting to carry the weight. There are things that camera phones can't do yet, but once one knows the ropes of a camera phone, they really are so helpful to be able to get photos in the everyday.

Hope you had a a good walk in that sun!

Thanks for showing us a "piece of your world", Colin. By the way, an impressive view from the heights of Cown Edge.

A fine topic for this WPD Colin. A long view to my closest city Manchester but from a different angle to most of mine. Well done.
As you are using a DSLR here and not real film, I presume the Fuji Velvia film simulation is software driven and therefore need not be done with a Fuji camera! However I wait to be enlightened.

Best Wishes. Herb

ps -I too used to shoot with that Fuji Velvia 35mm film from time to time in the good old days!

The in-camera option allows a selection of Fuji film simulations Velvia, Provia, Astia etc.
In Adobe Lightroom they appear as camera matched profiles when editing a Fuji Raw (.RAF) file so they can be selected at the point of editing.
Not sure if it’s possible with other camera RAW files
