Making footpaths more accessible for all. stiles removed and replaced with gates often with this style that can be pushed or pulled open.

Paths on open landscape are wonderful but the problem in the Lake District Park is too many people on the same paths.
On lower level the land is dominated by livestock, mostly sheep but also cattle which means fencing and traditionally stiles over walls or fences were used for footpaths.

You point at the problem: too much people...
Here is the same, so the same is done to protect nature.
Fortunately in the high hills not much hikers, people prefer being (packed) on kms of sand by the sea.
I know the old paths up hills, the ones used by shepherds and sheep... and in this season I hike before sunrise because after it gets quickly too hot.

A great idea if it improves access Colin. I absolutely love this image. The strong gate with the light on it and that beautiful boken behind it really appeals to me. Simple but effective.
