Manchester 1 year ago.

Manchester 1 year ago.
Just about everything that fills my mind has changed in 2020. My own life is unrecognisable, people have died (family, friends, former work colleagues), my house is sold, my possessions are in boxes or have been discarded. Far too many in boxes, far too few in the bins :-)

I hope to find a new direction in 2021.

I will probably take some photographs that alone seems unchanged.

I will keep an eye on Ipernity.

Good Luck to everyone in 2021.

Colin

That's a great shot of the city.. Colin.. a smack on angle ...I think you've captured the whole centre... btw. in the early 1960s ..I worked there - as a youth.. and the C.I.S building was the tallest in the UK. at the time....obviously that's changed today.
Keep well.. and good wishes... from Dj.

I was a commuter 1970s To 2000s. I have never set foot in the city in over 8 years so would probably get lost now

“ Ye distant spires, ye antique tow'rs, ” certainly a distant prospect of Manchester, as Gray’s was of Eton. Interesting to read that poem ( Ode to a Distant Prospect of Eton College.) again in the light of our own times. I wonder if it’s possible to mentally “bin” or “box” all that is previous and live...almost like a version of Robinson Crusoe, more in the present, with what you have left and what there is. A conscious choosing of “ignorance is bliss, ‘Tis folly to be wise”.

Perhaps one of the consolations of photography is that it makes us live actively in the present, hunting for the bright, small sustaining thing....as Crusoe did. Not a book that many have mentioned, I think, but perhaps particularly useful today.

A thought provoking photograph!

Hello Steve, Thank you for your kind words.
I will be honest and say I find Manchester an ugly city. There are some fine buildings there but they are lost in the chaos around them. Many of the people I worked with all those years loved and still love the city. I must say I was often frightened when there and have only recovered by staying away. So in that respect I put Manchester in a box and now only take that lid off from a safe distance.
I’m glad you like the photo. the lighting that day was captivating.

A great view Colin. Manchester has always been close to my heart having attended evening classes there in the early 1970s. Also I was regularly assigned to passenger loading duties on summer Friday evenings and Saturday mornings at the coach stations in East Street, Central Station Forecourt and Chorlton Street at the same time.

Just where was this photograph taken from?

Best wishes to you for 2021.

David, I studied at Manchester Polytechnic in the early 70s and the worked at UMIST and Manchester University after that. It is possible that I walked past while you were at Chorlton St. on those Friday evenings!

The photo was taken about half way up the track from Moorfield,Glossop to Snake Summit via Black Moor.

best wishes for 2021

An excellent urban scene and great light, Colin. Very sorry to hear of your year, ours hasn't been good either, with my wife having major health issues. With that thought, let's both hope for a healthy and happy New Year in 2021.

Great foggy light... and sorry about your bad year, not good around me either, too many close relatives lost, too many bad news...
The most important is what we keep in our minds, that no-one can steel from us, and taking pictures helps seeking for light, as photography is about light.
Hope to see you here next year, wishing you all the best.

Thank you. It has been another foggy day for us today but with no brightness in the sky.
Let’s hope for some better days in 2021. I hope you are blessed with some sunlight.

Hi Colin, a familiar view to the centre of Manchester but I can't recognise exactly where this was taken from.
Your life this year looks even worse than ours was. We know of friends of family who have died with C19 so we have continued to live in almost total isolation but that being said, we are doing well. Our house and its location works well so we can exercise and we have seen members of family -allbeit at the two metre length away.
I do hope that the coming year is far better, but as I listen to the news as I type this -there is not any good at all, but for the hope of us all receiving the vaccination. Maybe Ipernity will work again soon at least. Our next set of holls are looking decidedly unlikely. . Anyway:

I wish you a Very Happy and Safe New Year

thanks Herb, The photo was taken on the track from Moorfield, Glossop that heads up to Snake Summit via Black Moor. It’s a steep way to climb Kinder Scout on then via Mill Hill and Ashop Head. I didn’t get that far that occasion. It don’t think my time has been much worse than anyone else who has been affected in the same way but I assume many people are sailing through oblivious at the moment.

I have a holiday booked for Mid-April in the Lakes (fingers crossed for that one).

Wishing a Happy New Year and a healthy one.

Many of our possessions are also in boxes awaiting a house move and like you have not discarded enough,

I do wish you a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Hi Roger,
i have become a hoarder and that is partly because of throwing so much away when I moved house in the 1990s I made some terrible mistakes discarding things like photographs, books, diaries, not to mention my Subbuteo football teams :-)

Good luck with your move and I hope you have a Happy New Year. Stay healthy
