Do you remember the year it was finally abandoned, Colin? I passed my driving test in April 75 and I recall driving on this road shortly afterwords (I think!)

yes that would be possible. - I was a couple of years ahead of you and must have driven it when fully open but only remember when it was single track traffic light controlled. www.bgs.ac.uk/landslides/mamtor.html confirms it was finally abandoned in 1979 which is a good deal later than I would have guessed.
