Stormy Monday

It's Monday and I was prompted by the music to post this image. A well known song, but two tracks on this link - start at 5.25. I'd suggest large and loud. :-) Explored.

Fog Bow, Macquarie Island

When Ipernity member Herb Riddle recently posted a photo of a fog bow, it seemed I was one of the very few who had previously seen one. Herb asked if I had a photo from my sighting and this is it, taken on Kodachrome slide film at Macquarie Island (a very foggy place) in 1968. Maybe view large. Explored.

Storm coming

We had some very tropical weather with heat and humidity. Not long after I took this photo, a thunderstorm gave us over 25mm of rain in about half an hour.

Weather coming

A stitched panorama of this cloudscape, taken late afternoon. A few hours later the associated weather arrived and we had over 100mm rain that night. A few fences here, so HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

What next?

We've just had a day of wild weather, with the temperature here up to 34C and howling gales feeding new bushfires (with thick dust haze in the morning). An afternoon cool change cleared the dust and gave a view of the smoke from a large fire only 20km away and out of control in rugged country. It will be interesting to see how things develop over coming days until it can be controlled. UPDATE: I've now added 2 PiPs, taken on the morning of 28 Nov, when the smoke drifted our way. Late PM 29/11 - The fire is now about 4800 Ha and seems to be contained. Unfortunately a much worse fire has developed about 70km away, covers over 19000 Ha, is out of control and threatening residential areas.

Good and not-so-good news

Our rain gauge this morning, making it a very Happy Fence Friday indeed. A major weather event is bringing copious rain to eastern Australia and should extinguish the fires here, though unfortunately it also is bringing flooding to some areas. That's Australia! Unfortunately, my other news is that Pauline has developed medical complications which have hospitalised her for the present. I'm afraid my involvement on ipernity again will be limited for some time. With those rather mixed items, HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.

The gauge

Macro Mondays - 162: 20 July 2020. Subject "Your own profession". Long ago I worked in meteorology. Later, while in other work, my wife and I purchased a rural property which we worked on weekends and full time after retirement. Watching the weather and rainfall was vitally important, so this image fits my background in two different ways. Best on black. Explored.

Lunar halo

I was very impressed to see this great lunar halo last night, formed by a layer of icy high level cirrostratus cloud. On the left are Jupiter and Saturn, sitting just below Sagittarius (see PiPs). Best viewed large on black.
