GPS is also lethal at times...

GPS where I live will get you into trouble... not out of it !!!

Not if used with some common sense--and a map! GPS just gives a location--e.g., there's a smartphone app that gives you your latitude and longitude, which a good map will have. The people that get in trouble are those that blindly follow computer generated directions. We have some serious Big Empty out here, too! ;)

I have a dumb phone... it makes phone calls only... no reception where I live .. so pointless having otherwise !

Turns out you don't need cell service for the app to work--the phone just needs to see the satellites! My son was demonstrating how he could get our location out in the middle of Pershing County, far out of cell-tower range.

Just as well the GPS works without phone connection out that way, Steve. Beyond the major roads and larger towns, we have some very large gaps in phone coverage. I suspect though, that as Pam comments, many people no longer carry maps - which is a concern. A couple from Europe perished in West Aust only this last summer, apparently through lack of preparations.

Yeah, there are fatalities here every year as well--winter and summer both, and in nearly all cases due to lack of preparation that sometimes defies belief. (Common sense? What's that?) I think a big part of the problem is that you're dealing with people used to controlled, typically urban environments. They've heard of "wilderness" as something healthful and natural, like a mega-spa or something, and they really don't realize it can reach out and kill you if you don't pay attention and approach it with due respect.

Certainly a sign to both read and remember. It seems to be in an area where a mobile phone would be totally useless, in such an area an inbuilt Car radio phone would probably be a good idea.
