Roadside sign in Central Australia and another image of the Breakaways area in a note. When heading into unknown territory, full preparations are advisable: who knows where we'll be next week? This seems strangely relevant advice with regard to a particular website!

Yeah, there are fatalities here every year as well--winter and summer both, and in nearly all cases due to lack of preparation that sometimes defies belief. (Common sense? What's that?) I think a big part of the problem is that you're dealing with people used to controlled, typically urban environments. They've heard of "wilderness" as something healthful and natural, like a mega-spa or something, and they really don't realize it can reach out and kill you if you don't pay attention and approach it with due respect.

Certainly a sign to both read and remember. It seems to be in an area where a mobile phone would be totally useless, in such an area an inbuilt Car radio phone would probably be a good idea.

Even on journeys when we know exactly where we are going, we always carry a map. Not because we are likely to get into trouble in a wilderness like this, but because there may be sudden road closures and diversions. We have a Tom-tom of course, but they can get one into some awkward situations, e.g. flooded fords, extremely narrow roads. Nothing like a good map. I hope you has your spare tyres with you, George. ;-)
