Eroded Timbers, Mawson's Hut
Section of the roof, showing the erosion of the timbers. Incessant blasting by snow carried by high winds has reduced the timber thickness, leaving nails proud of the surface and raised "shadows" where now-gone timbers have protected the surface for a period before being torn off by the wind. The capping on the left is steel.

Thank you very much, Rachel. Yes, it is remarkable the buildings have survived. Conservation work began only in fairly recent years (and, apparently, just in time) and now is being carried out by a volunteer group, the Mawson's Hut Foundation

Amazing x 10. Honestly, I sat and just STARED at this picture, thinking about what you wrote and looking at all the details of this ravaged wood. Incredible. Just wow. Love the textures and the nails, the ?scoured paint?...it's all just crazy to look at and imagine the power of nature!! Thanks for sharing, I put a question or two on the picture because I'm not sure what I'm looking at! :D

Janet, the impact of actually seeing the erosion was overwhelming - the photos don't really convey the full effect. I've tried to cover the answer to your query in another note alongside yours. FWIW, I gather from the Mawson's Hut Foundation website that some of the roof timbers had been thinned to about 10mm (from an original thickness of about 40mm) - if the winds had broken through then the hut would soon have been destroyed.
