Elephant seal pup

Elephant seal pup
This seal pup would have been two to three months old - they grow incredibly quickly. Strictly speaking it should be called a Southern Elephant Seal - but often they are referred to simply as "Ellies". That mucus on the nose is common and of no apparent significance.

From the Australian Antarctic Division website: "Pups weigh about 40 kg at birth and are weaned after 24 days by which time they weigh on average 120 kg. A large weaner may weigh in excess of 220 kg."

SOOOOOOOOOOO CUTE!!!! Seals are just adorable, and I esp love "Elle's" because they look so unlike their parents, esp if a male! :D How fun that you got so close for this fine image!!

I also wanted to say THANK YOU for the link to the Miniscule ladybug video!! I watched a whole bunch of them and was so happy to find something so new and adorable to see! So funny and silly! My favorite was the one you linked, totally hilarious! :D

Glad you liked the young seal, Janet. At that age they're at their most appealing. I had a zoom lens, but the wildlife on Macquarie has no land-based comments so is not at all shy.

So glad you enjoyed Miniscule, it was a regular feature of our evening TV for quite a while.
