hanbury street chapel, spitalfields, london

hanbury street chapel, spitalfields, london
this early c18 chapel has belonged to various groups of french huguenots, german lutherans, baptists and methodists, gaining a new extended facade in 1864 designed by g.m.north.
wesley preached here, dickens gave readings, and annie besant and eleanor marx organised the match girls strike from here. it became a church hall for christchurch in 1887, and now seems to house market stalls as the hanbury community centre , with the hall full of dividing walls. the arms of william and mary predate the hall.
