danbury church, essex

early c14 tower, with an unusual flintwork band containing two niches, rather restored, below a band made up of a flint and limestone chequer between lines of red brick or tile. how much of this is original ? whatever, this church is to be congratulated on always being unlocked, when its position by a main road but away from most houses would have led many to have shortsightedly closed their doors to the world. an unlocked church shows belief in openness, belief in man, and is a gift of space, history and beauty to the world. religion aside, it shows faith in optimism. the south aisle was rebuilt of iron puddingstone in 1866 by scott, the design based on the remaining north aisle.
