the church has walls built almost entirely of puddingstone, a brown conglomerate looking like a natural concrete, believed in the early middle ages to have magical properties. this aisle was only rebuilt in 1866 by scott, replacing a georgian brick one: it was devastated by a bomb during the war. the tower and chancel are c14.
